OK here's a legal solution...

There does exist a veterinary product that you are allowed to carry.

It's a Pepper spray to shoo-off aggressive dogs. It acts quicker than Mace. It has less after-effects than Mace

It has a median range of 3 metres. It's a single use only item.

go figure as to whether you can distinguish between the 2 legged or 4 legged variety...

As bad as it is, I actually do carry a Swiss Army knife around in my car at all times. Chances are I'll never have to use it, but if things started to get really nasty then I'd whip it out as a warning for them to back off. No, I wouldn't stab someone, unless my life was in critical danger and it was the only way to prevent myself from getting killed.

I used to think like this, but have changed my mind.

Having a weapon to "keep me safe" is a huge can of worms.

The problem with this sort of thing is, unless you are well versed in the use of said weapon, in a pressure situation it could easily end up in the hands of your attacker.

Much better that no one carries weapons, i.e. knives, and those that do; regardless of their intent, are treated extremely harshly, i.e MASSIVE fines for possesion, and MANDATORY jailterms if you use one. If no one carries knives; no hot head can lose his cool and stab someone, "He said something to my mate so I cut him". Knives do so much damage, think carefully before you carry one.

That said, why carry a Swiss Army Knife?

The penalties are the same, regardless of the blade, why not have a 7" blade, with a proper grip.

Do some damage instead of "Back off punk, or I'll cut you with my, hang on, while I pull out the blade, nope, that's the magnifying glass, hang on, nope, thats the scissors, ahh f##k! :D .

+1!

I believe just before they banned knives to be carried on people in NSW that there was some research done, and it was found something like 70 to 80% of stabbing victims were stabbed by their own knife.

I'd believe that.

I think lots of people imagine flashing a knife at someone is going to be like the scene in Crocodile Dundee, and the baddie's will run away, leaving you looking like a hero.

The reality is often VERY different.

Lying in an empty carpark, writhing in agony, with your own knife sticking out of your abdomen, bleeding to death, would be a very sad way to die.
