I am preping the car to do a little track work (propably 4-5 times a year), nothing serious, just wanting to have a little fun in a controlled environment.

I am considering removing the Hicas as many people have recommended doing, but b4 doing so i would like to get a couple of issues cleared up.

1/ If the car handles better without the HICAS why was it installed throughout the 32, 33 and 34 models?

2/ If the fuse is taken out for track days, is the HICAS firmly locked in the neutral positon?

3/ On a R33 what methods can be used in disabling/removing the HICAS?

4/ Can anyone please supply links to suppliers that have kits for R33's?

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan, this has been discussed a great number of times I suggest you do a search. In the interim brief suggestion follow your questions......

1/ If the car handles better without the HICAS why was it installed throughout the 32, 33 and 34 models?

Wally factor. It makes the car safer for the wallys, it doesn't make the car handle better. I have a question for you, if HICAS makes the car handle better then why is there none, zero, zilch, SFA, race cars with HICAS?

2/ If the fuse is taken out for track days, is the HICAS firmly locked in the neutral position?

No

3/ On a R33 what methods can be used in disabling/removing the HICAS?

Replace the rack with a tube and screw the std steering links into the tube. Or buy a kit from Tomei which has washers that you stick in the ends of the rack to stop it moving. We replace the rack as it is lighter.

If you have replaced the rack then remove the hydraulics, it also saves a lot of weight. If you used a Tome kit then you do nothing else but plug in the electronics box that tricks the dash warning light.

If you have replaced the rack and removed all the other useless parts then remove the HCAS warning bulb from the dash as it will stay on.

4/ Can anyone please supply links to suppliers that have kits for R33's?

Try the Tomei outlets, I use these guys.....

Hope that helps

Thanks :D

Have recently read a thread relating to the R32 hicas system and it's removal. You also stated the removal of the hydrolics in that thread.

Does the R33 HICAS work hydrolicly? I thought that only the 32's had a hydrolic system, as the 33's and 34's were upgraded to a fully electronic system.

I am cosidering using the TOMIE system as it can be easily reverted back to normal if need be. Also wouldn't the removal of about 30kg of parts effect the "balance" and front to rear weight distribution of the car, thus effecting it's handling.

I am just trying to get educated on such matters :(, i am in no way trying to 2nd guess your tactics, as your knowledge and experience is FAR greater than mine.

Thanks

Alan

Would installing the TOMIE HICAS lock kit damage the system? Just thinking, if the shims prevent the HICAS from moving, would it cause great strain on the mechanics or does the electronic box disable the system completely (kills power to the HICAS)?

    • Hi everyone, I’m Dave from Canberra. Here's a few pics of my 1992 R32 GTST coupe which I imported back in 2006. Only mods so far are HKS Hi-power cat back exhaust, K&N filter, ATC Volanti steering wheel, Pioneer stereo, amp and sub. This was my daily driver up until 2015 and sadly hasn’t been driven at all in the last 5 years due to marriage, work, and kids taking up most of my time and spare cash.As such its in need of a bit of TLC and one of my goals for this year is to get it back to running condition and maybe look into club/historic rego. I’ve joined SAU so I can ask a few questions along the way (although I promise to google Current Problem +SAU beforehand!)
    • From talking to the mx5 guys the NC doesn't actually need bonnet vents like the earlier NA and NB models, due to a better designed cooling system and undertray design There's plenty of them used as street cars and weekend track toys running anywhere from around 170 to 250kw with stock non vented bonnets, I initially was going to get some bonnet vents, but, as they are not actually required, I'll put vents on hold for a while and just monitor temps, though I do need to get something to actually monitor engine oil temps though, coolant temp can be pulled from the OBD2, but the oil gauge in the car is not actual oil temp, it is only a calculation based off coolant temp and RPM ☹️ They do recommend upgrading the radiator, which I have already done with a triple pass, and the only other thing they recommend for a street car is heat management, like I talked about above to protect bits in the engine bay from radiant heat, and to either replace the nearly 20 year old plastic coolant expansion tank, which I have done, or get a aftermarket alloy jobbie for some bling They did also say that if I wanted to track the car on occasion a oil cooler and sump baffle would be required, and as I already have had a sump baffle installed when the engine was out......... I'm going to get a oil cooler with a thermostat....... just in case I do eventually track the car, but probably not, but still maybe...🤪
