I did an extensive search, and couldnt really find anything useful to help me

my problem is when the car is cold, it missfires really badly, coughs and splutters and won't drive right and is under powered

there is no problems starting the car, it starts like a dream, and then even idles like a dream, but if i touch the accelerator or try to drive the car it just misfires really badly and is under powered and hessitates

it also blows a fair bit of smoke as i drive up my hill after cold start (will this be the unburnt fuel from the misfiring cylinder?)

once the engine coolant temp reaches 50-60 degrees C the problem goes away and the car is fantastic!

i've got

splitfire coilpacks (few months old)

bcpr7es 0.8mm gapp plugs (replaced 3 days ago, the first cold start the car was great!, but then the next morning it was back to this problem)

fmic

3-3.5" turbo back exhaust

gt3071r - (1 month old)

555cc injectors - bosch yellows (4 months old)

z32 afm - (4 months old)

040 fuel pump - (1 year old)

power fc

what could be the problem?

na, will be something simple like your coolant temperature sensor. cost bugger all to replace. change that and problem solved.

try unplugging this sensor (drivers sside of radiator - clipped to shroud)

my car would simply idle high with this disconnected

if unplugging it doesnt make a change then it wont be that

if his power fc is showing normal temps as it warms up then the sensor will be working fine. assuming your getting your temps from the hand controller?

if you do have a h/c then check what the cold enrichment settings are

by cold enrichment settings, do you mean water temp correction?

if so

+80°c 1.00 1.00

+50°c 1.09 1.15

+30°c 1.14 1.29

+10°c 1.32 1.65

-10°c 1.39 1.73

-30°c 1.59 2.00

the only thing i can think of is that i havent had the car retuned for this new turbo... still tuned for old turbo, and i believe its running really rich, so possibly fouling the plugs and when the engine gets up to temperature its hot enough to overcome the fouled plugs?

because i put the new set of plugs in when it was stone cold, and it had no issues with the fresh plugs, but the next morning it started to come back.. and progressivly got worse over the next couple of days

and thoughts Trent?

i must get off my arse and get back in for the retune

    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.
    • You need to know I am sorry for this.
    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1
    • Nah. H2S. H2S is "rotten egg gas", which is what is associated with no cat. SO2 is equally nasty, and if you've ever smelt it you'll know all about it. More of a choking, acid in the back of the throat sort of thing. But you can only smell it in a narrow range up to about 1ppm. Above that, it irritates your mucous membranes, but you don't smell it.
    • Kicked the 34 in the guts, she won’t be seeing the road till I get the 31 mobile again.  wont be long and she’s a bit of a garage princess anyway haha
