Skyline Mods Vs Nsw Police

Hi all,

Not sure where to start this, I have some drama with the Cops Vs car...

I have a lightly modded R34 gtt Skyline. Its the first performance car ive owned. Im a mature driver. My car is not heavily modded, lowered , spoilers, wings etc etc...nothing like that. It looks pretty stock standard apart from the 4 inch exhaust prodtruding from the rear and a front mount intercooler. It has a BOV (very small and hard to actually hear unless at high revs) It also has a KnN red pod filter. Stock/No boost.

I have been booked 3 times in 2 weeks, And forced to go to some government compliance agency for emissions (Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water. ) ALLLLL this and ive only owned the car for 5 weeks, cant imagine where ill be in Ten Weeks......

I have been pulled over twice while already stopped... ( stopped at red traffic light when i was stopped by Police and while parked the Police followed me to the shops and then asked me to go back to my car with them so they can check it)

Its all pretty stupid, some little girl out west if missing (presumed dead) and the cops have little to do other than follow me to the shops. Anyhows...... Im told that the BOV is illegal and it must be removed, im told the intercooler will not pass an emissions test (still to be conducted at Botany RTA) and the Pod filter Must be enclosed in a box or the original put back on.

If i do not do this i will join the Ten Most Wanted Criminals in the world and reffered to interpol.

I am wondering if someone can help me, offer any advice on any of these issues. Is there a place who can build a custom perspects box for my pod filter??. Is there a way to buy or mod the BOV so it can switch somehow to the pipe it needs to be connected to for emissions control and then back to normal ???....... (not sure what i mean as im a novice) And does anyone know anything about Front Mount Intercoolers emissions testing, why would an Intercooler be Illegal according to the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water.

Any help at all is appreciated. :)

Thanks!

There are numerous fabricators to cover the pod. I'm planning alloy. The BOV can be changed to factory or a "plumb back". If you look at the E85 forums a retune may well give you a pass with FMIC to show the cops. I agree many worse crooks around. The whole RTA and police thing is targeting working tax payers. Carbon cost and pollution of an Urban SUV is much higher than a turbo skyline.

I feel just terrible for you guys in australia. Here in Canada were allowed to pretty much do whatever we want to our cars and have no hassel other than our initial out of country/ province and insurance inspections. Only thing we may eventually get tagged with is if our exhaust is too loud or if cops catch you using nos on the street. Sorry I know this is off topic but do your skylines have to be a certain age before you can bring them into the country?

White GTT,

thanks you for the help with that, ill check it out and see what i can do for a retune etc, then have it tested, hope it passes, it sounds pretty technical and hard to get things of quality passed. Never having been through this, its a horrible time im having. You know i was booked twice within Ten minutes of each offense for the same offense.... Over taking (twice) incorrectly, not coming back onto my side of the road before the broken lines ran out..... not that i just didnt pull back in, i did but like a few feet longer than i should have. They didnt even stop me but rather let that continue to rack up the doe!

When i was again stopped on Monday, the cop said "quote, "you have two choices, sell your car or get used to being pulled over" ...I had this flash come to mind at that point and while he was asking for 'papers' of being dragged off to concentration camp...

Hey there thanks for the comments: I cant get over the attitude cops here have toward cars, and mine is not such a stand out car being stock.... im totally shocked they have to do this, i cant understand it and why do they stop cars doing the right thing? that doesn't make sense. It makes me feel like doing the wrong thing, im going to get stopped and interrogated anyway. I loved your "so long as you dont have noss comment lolz , so casual but i can assure u if you had noss here you would be shot on the spot! Not sure about the age of an import for Australia but now you mention it, id say there would be something but i dont know.

at least we don't have crazy state registration offices demanding DOT approved headlights, resulting in skylines sporting Integra headlights to get registration like you guys in Canoodlia

And no we can import any skyline of any age, as long as it meets the power to weight requirement (ie must be a performance car).

nathan, sounds like you just have an illegally modded car which is grabbing their attention (maybe loud BOV?) It's pretty easy to get it back to legal if it's just induction mods. Cover the pod and replace the BOV with a recirc valve and you should be fine.

Hey there :D The BOV is so soft, lol for a BOV its almost an embarrassment, at one point the cops tried to test it but it didnt make a sound lol. I have a cannon exhaust which they do not like... I didnt know they are bad, but the car itself is so quiet i find that pedestrians step out in front of it, people do not hear it coming. I also live in an over 55s complex (no im well under...long story) but if they hear any noise here they complain and the car doesnt bother anyone here. (mebbie they just cant hear  )

Not sure what a Recic Valve is?... I looked on google, Its a recirculating valve but cant seem to find out what it does.

Hey RO11ING, The DECC guy said that my intercooler will not pass, and said ill need to take it to the RTA emissions testing at Botany. I think that is why im being told to retune it. Not sure how returning helps with emissions? and dont understand what an Intercooler has to do with emissions. Someone Pmd me with a box, so that side should be okes:)

i know in victoria the epa states you can have a pod filter OR a front mount intercooler, not both. and the pod filter must not be of the oiled cotton type. which pretty much all filters are. so your not allowed to clean your air and cool it- one or the other buddy

also im not sure that a front mount and exhaust would cause you to fail emmisions testing? i mean the cars basically stock.

but you will need to have a plumb back bov. atmo valves have no value (aside from noise) anyway with a maf equipped car. and if yours is quiet ditch it and get a stockie :D

cheers, Rowdy.

By the sounds of it.. You don't need a front mount anyway.. Front mount shouldnt cause a problem i would have thought.. Also post pics of your BOV.. it sounds stock to me..

If they are constantly pulling you over.. I would be looking at changing your plates.. Previous owner was prob on the wrong side of the law.. If it continues.. I would start writing down a log of occurances.. Even record it.. Name, Badge, Car ID.. Time, Reason given.. If it's the same officers then it shows a pattern.. Make it 100% stock and if they are excessive then I would go to the CMC.. But you will prob have a fight on your hands.. They will be on you all the time..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't "retune" a standard R34ECU without a daughterboard/flash. They might be able to take out timing etc mechanically, but that's about it. As with all the answers

1. Get a standard air box, with snorkel- EPA can and will say "no" to a pod in a box. Better to get standard to pass.

2. Get a SMIC from the wreckers

3. Get a Nissan standard Plumb back "recirc" valve- wreckers as well- takes about 10 mins to install dude

4. Change your number plates- it's def possible the previous owners have a bad driving record

5. Go to an exhaust shop, get them to check Decibel level. If under, it doesn't matter if it's a cannon or oval exhaust, it will be legal. As long as it doesn't sit low your fine

+1 Speaking from a Victorian perspective - Wouldn't worry about point number 2 - BUT it might be difernet for NSW.

If you have to get emissions checked - ensure your cat is in good working order.

NSW is no intake mods. VIC is 1 intake mod (either pod or FMIC).

nathan, recirc valve is what comes factory on your car, in other words a "plumbed back BOV".

Just find someone with a standard R34 GTT blow-off-valve and put it on to pass the inspection/emmissions test. The standard blow-off valves "recirculate" the air back into the intake instead of venting it to the atmosphere, therefore not releasing any potentially harmful gasses into the atmosphere (in the eyes of the law); although you exhaust releases a lot more =\

    • Great info @tidi0x  Will definitely be handy for others and maybe me if I decide to keep the shit box H pattern.
    • Bumping this up one last time.... I wanted to follow up on the clutch slave issue. I realized that what the issue comes down to is the pocket is flat milled, and the cylinder does not want rest flat. So in order to mount it correctly you will need to make a spacer for the fingers so the cylinder is floating. I took two plates of aluminum, drilled some holes and was good. I did still need to make the relief cuts in the bell housing, as even with the spacer the bleed section still interferes. The OE bell housing the mounting holes are raised from the housing.
    • If the event in USA goes ahead will be interesting as it seems the rules will get more cars over here. Apparently the track is laguna seca too. Yeah s15, if I get a the lower dash trims, centre console and change front cross member to standard LCA position will fit clubsprint. See how rules are as i would rather do complete widebody than a bolt on flare to run the 295 with proper clearance.
    • If the car is legal height I can't see it being an issue. Found a thread on reddit that might offer some insight.   I got a ticket from a copper in QLD for my S15 being too low. They had this wheel thing on a stick that they put under the car and it hit my exhaust. Anyhow went to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust tucked up/hung a little higher and I wound the coilovers up a smidge. Don't think I even had to go back to the police station unlike when I got defected for having a carbon bonnet when I brought the S15 from the ACT to QLD and had to replace it and then rock up at a police station and have a yougish female officer who knew nothing about cars confirm that I had changed bonnets. Should have just painted the carbon bonnet yellow to match the rest of the car lol
    • Id like to race in the US i think alot of those track would suit me   For the s15? Youd be stuck between club sprint and the new Open Am wouldnt you depending on how much interior you have left in
