Which program are you using?

If you're images are in bitmap or similar, there should be a "Save as" or an "Export" option.

When you export, change the format to something such as PNG or JPEG, this will rapidly decrease the size. If you've taken the photo off a camera, or if its high resolution, you might want to scale the image down to 1xxx pixels, so something like 1200 x <?> pixels or smaller ;)

Less pixels is of course a smaller image and smaller file size.

Oh, blind_elk if you want to do screenshots from webpages, and you use FireFox, my choice is FireShot. Its a little heavyweight but you can add little notes on the image before saving it: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5648/

Any images uploaded to SAU - are compressed when inserted into a post as Paul posted above.

You must follow Pauls method however for it to work that way.

If you hotlink them from say, photobucket or some other site, sometimes they will compress depending on the users resolution/screen size.

It varies in that situation obviously.
