Hey guys im looking into buying an R34 which has a stock turbo. However im also looking into buying an aftermarket turbo as time goes on,but im worried about getting defected by the police for aftermarket turbos. Is there any way that i could legally install an after market turbo kit and have no problems with the police.

thanx in advance guys

Bryce

I'm a little confused on this one, are you looking at just swapping out the old turbo for a new one. Or changing it from a single to twin?

If it's just a swap, you really shouldn't have any problem unless it's an illegal turbo in the first place, failing that, just rework the piping to hide the turbo 'under' the engine. Unless you get an Officer whose looking to bust your balls, they're not going to get on all fours to look under the car and risk getting their uniform dirty.

None of my friends have been done for their AMarket turbo's in their car and my old WRX was never done for that either.

The other trick, have something in the engine bay that stands out that could be considered illegal. There's some BOVs out there that are perfectly legal (No wastegate noise) but are made to look like one that does, cops see that and pretty much ignore the other stuff. Other good one is pod filters if your car comes stock with an Intercooler and it's still the 'stock' one that comes out. You'll get told that the Pod filters are illegal, just fire back in that "I'm totally ignorant because it's my first Turbo car" manner that you thought a vehicle was allowed one air-modification (Pod or Intercooler) and since it came standard with the Intercooler, the Pod is the mod (Worked for me on the WRX).

Just my experiences from the past, hope they might help.

^^ hiding a turbo under a skyline engine doesnt quite seem practical to me lol (not taking the piss). just do it right the first time and dont run the risk of being defected. check out the hypergear forum and the results hes getting from his hi-flows. and as far as pods go, just get a hi flow panel filter. people are still using the standard airboxes with hi hp engines. which means you can upgrade your intercooler.

Totally agree with you because,i dont want anything to do with cops. Im trying to get an aftermrket twin turbo at about 15psi.and yes i will change the pistons and crank to forged ones. and do hi flows have similar perfomance to aftermarket comparing apple for apple.

so your looking at a gtr? look at the hypergear thread and ask him a question regarding hi-flowing the gtr turbos (he will need a power figure that you want to achieve). also check out the build threads and see what other people have done, there may not be a need to go fully forged if you only want say 300kws etc. do a bit more homework and choose a power figure you want to achieve before you start spending thousands ;)
