Hey Everyone,

ive searched thoroughly, but long story short like hundereds off us with R33 GTS-T's and front mount non turn flow intercoolers ive been defected, ive already since the defect reinforced the hole i cut with a 40mm wide donut and welded it in place, ive also reinforced the front reo bar where i had to trim it, i organised for and engineer to have a look at my car and he was pleased with the reinforcements, he was keen to write up the engineers certificate then and there, but when he asked for the year of the car which is a 98 model, he asked whether the car had airbags or not, of course it does and he instantly said nah sorry mate i can't help you with the certificate, and that was that, i went to another engineer that same day and he also said he couldnt pass it due to the car having airbags,

Now what really frustrates me is that the R33 GTR has a front mount standard, has airbags and uses the same type of deployment sensor located under the centre console as the R33 GTS-T, and it isnt a problem, so why is it so difficult to get our GTS-T's engineered, where i cut the hole for the intercooler pipe even has the m6 bolt threads for where the GTR factory intercooler piping mounts up, it seems easier to get a engine conversion for a sr20 into a datto 1200 ute Engineered than that of what im trying to do, anyhelp would be much appreciated, Cheers

Sounds like you are in Vic?

Yep - no engineer will sign off on that with a model that comes equipped with airbags. Liability thing more than anything else.

Common knowledge really and you should have consulted an engineer before making modifications, not after.

Nothing you can do about it - sell the car to someone interstate and buy another.

GTS-t and GTR are not the same chassis wise anyway so not sure what your point about GTR's is exactly.

And of course a SR20 into a datto is easier to get engineered, very simple conversion and within the confines dictated by VicRoads.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a cheap turn flow FMIC from somewhere like justjap and fix the hole under the battery tray rather than pay to get it engineered with the ring welded in?

Or is it modification to the reo that an engineer would have trouble with?

Yeah im in Vic, but besides the flared guards and different suspension there isnt any major difference between the two chassis's, why is it this guy can get his r34 gtt engineered which has airbags and i can't http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/In...fe-t251353.html

To sell the car is just silly and i had consulted other people who had frontmounts and engineers certificates, but it just seems lately its proving very difficult to get it done,

a datto 1200 chassis is a POS, and has no safety what so ever, factory output 1171cc engine 51kw, sr20 stock output 184kw its not a "very simple conversion"

how can that be justified by them yet i cant have a front mount,

As I stated the engineer was happy with the reinforcements i had done, thats not the problem at all!! also i didnt hack the battey tray as all 33's have the battery in the boot, i was making a reference to the GTR as its intercooler pipes run in exactly the same position as mine do now yet mine are illegal, vicroads will do anything to make money

it can be done, i just need help off people who have done it, not comments of selling the car, which dont help at all, im not meaning to be a dick but thats why i posted this thread, hopefully it can help me and many other people get there car's legal and not just a money pit for the goverment

And an entire 4WD assembly in there...

The thread you linked - he got lucky. It happens.

I guess you could try ring 100 different VASS engineers until you find one silly enough to say yes - that is your only option in terms of "where too". Or paint over it and pray. :)

But im guessing it's listed on a defect notice so you might not be so lucky as to get off that way.

It's always been that way, and engineers were always going to come down on it harder and harder as Police are defecting people more and more. It's just how the cycle goes.

You can get one engineered installed that fashion - just not with airbags as it's deemed to be cutting into the chassis in a non factory way.

It's not about money making, VASS engineers have thier reasons for not signing off - You'd know that already, given you would have asked why they said no :(

Datto's don't have airbags, so yes it is a relatively simple conversion.

You can have a front mount, just within the confines of Victorian law.
