Ok just had a question for you technical guys out there to see if this would work or would this be a big no no. im upgrading my exhaust system and will be running a Varex oval twin tip muffler and plan on running it as listed below:

3"dump into de-cat pipe into varex muffler (this will be installed where the middle muffler is sitting now, then extend the tips to the rear of the car.

The whole point of this is to hide the fact that the car is running a varex. I don't have a problem with running a loud ass exhaust but be good to just shut it up when passing though booze pus and so on.

Discuss :)

Yeah, nothing wrong with it as far as I can tell. But with one muffler and no cat, it'll still be fkn loud on the quiet setting...

I'd suggest a decent sized resonator after the muffler, and still well out of sight of the tail pipe, then make the tail pipe as close to stock looking as possible...

Good ideas mate!

I'd suggest running a cat...a) Its legal, b) doesnt hurt performance much if its a good cat.

+1

Too-loud exhaust? Caution, possibly defect + fix-by-date, bill $100-$500 depending on what needs to be done.

No cat? Probably defect + possible $11k fine + fix-by-date, bill $100-500 + $fine...

If you get EPA'd they will generally have a look under the car if it has a 3" exhaust but is under the DB limit - to check for that kinda thing.

They had a GOOD look under my car when i went there wih a 3.5" exhaust and passed. Dude couldnt believe his eyes until he saw the size of the mufflers etc.

Also it wont stop the officers hearing you drive past and defecting you based upon that which tends to happen a bit as well :)

Its a good idea in theory, and in other states would probably work a treat however Vic just doesnt roll like that if you get the wrong officer on the wrong day.

Other issues you'll come by are how low the exhaust has to hang to cater for the motor part of the varex, and thats if it will even fit under there to begin with (in terms of overall muffler size).

So that would bring about potential ride height issues or a very obvious "dip" in the exhaust to lower it enough to cater for the varex motor.

Not familiar with the underbody of the chaser but you may have space issues with installing a varex half way as they are a fairly large muffler due to the internal 3 chambers design especially if you get the larger piping size ones like the 3.5".

Edit - err, nismoid beat me to it lol.

does the minimum ground clearance of 100mm rule apply to exhaust as well...or just chassis..
Not in NZ - does not apply to body kits or exhaust - don't know about your state.

hmmmmm

there is a fair bit of room but ye it might sit a little too low. at the moment the middle muffller is sitting 50-60mm from the ground and thats smaller then the varex...

thanks for the input guys :D

Im so sick of so many people all just putting these redicolously fines for no cats its not even true, If anything you just get the same fine as you would if you get caught and epad on the spot.

Yeah I've never heard of a single case EVER of someone actually getting a fine like that.

My understanding is that there is a provision for a very large fine in the legislation - some $11-12k but no one yet has been hit with it. There will be a first time though

Used to happen all the time in Wollongong on Australia Day and Anzac Day.

You should definitely believe it.

I honestly don't believe you. $11k for not running a cat, if someone can actually provide evidence of someone actually being fined this amount I'll buy you a beer lol.

People get charged less for running over a cyclist and killing them.

Sigh. The quoted possible penalty isn't ridiculous (that is, I mean it's possible to be hit with that number).

From 'Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 No 92'

( http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/viewtop/...1999+FIRST+0+N/ ):

and/or 'Crimes Act 1914' as amended in 2007:

1 penalty unit = $110

From 'Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2010'

( http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/fragview...+2010+whole+0+N ):

For not using a "required anti-pollution device" (e.g. a catalytic converter):

Maximum penalty: 400 penalty units (in the case of a corporation) or 200 penalty units (in the case of an individual).

So the maximum penalty for not having a catalytic converter is now $22k for an individual.

And that's not including any other offences a person might get done for at the same time.

For example, because there is no cat 'Excessive Air Impurities' probably also applies - another 200-penalty-unit-maximum fine.

Sure, the numbers are very large - maybe even 'ridiculous'.

I personally believe it's very unlikely that an individual car driver would get hit with the full penalty units for a first offence.

But that's not to say it cannot / will not happen.

Cheers,

Saliya

The only people that would actually cop fines like that are companies when big diesel trucks are caught running without or with a stuffed particle filter for several thousand kilometres.

An individual not running a cat will never get fined anywhere near that.

You should get Damien at katsutadai works to make your exhaust.

mate has one on his chaser and it sounds beautiful. quite when cruising and loud and raw when you give it a little.

Quality is pretty amazing too.

He's in Brisbane. but I'm pretty sure he can make them up and send it to you.

    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
    • Awesome writeup and details. Thanks for sharing the story so far. I can relate to parts of it with my previous car and some of the issues I had to deal with.
    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!
