Hey guys,

Did a quick search and couldnt find wat i needed and im in a bit of a rush as the cars apart etc...

Ok so i just did a comp test and results are:

Cyl 1 - 165

2 - 160

3 - 160

4 - 155

5 - 160

6 - 170

As far as i know thats not too bad besides cyl 4 being a lil low. Anyone care to enlighten?

Ok next question. On cyl 3 and 4 there was oil underneath the coilpacks. Ive taken a pic to show wat im talking about. Now just last week i had it at tuners and he did a comp test, where upon he told me the compression was low but didnt give me the readings because he forgot. So i wanted to know how low and which cyls was low so i can diagnose the problem etc. Could he possibly have done a 'wet' comp test and this be spilt oil? Im not sure...

Next ques. One of the spark plugs had more black residue around the head than the others. Once again ive taken a pic. I think it was the 6th cyl sparky. Anything to worry about here?

Last question. The other reason i wanted to pull the car apart was because of a misfire my car seems to be having. Its got 5 splitfire coilpacks and 1 yellow jacket coilpack, reason for this one splitfire melted aand couldnt find an individual one to replace it. Anyone see a problem with this?

Now also the spark plugs that are in there are NGK V-Power R5671A-8 plugs. Im assuming the -8 means there gapped to 0.8mm? Are these good spark plugs for my mildly modded r33? This is why im in a rush, cuz if they not so good then i'll need to duck out and replace them while the cars apart....

So after all that i thnkyou for ANY help that is given.

Regards

Struggling noob....

fwiw heres my take on a couple of your probs. The oil in the valley is more than likely a leaking tappet cover gasket.

That black plug is probably telling you that is the cylinder that is causing your misfire prob. Check your coil pack on that cylinder or your loom.

Hope this is of some asistance to you.

Excuse me for my dumbness, but is a tappet cover the same as a 'rocker' cover? As wehn it was at the tuners he replaced teh rocker cover because it was leaking, so id be happy with that result :(

I will check over the coilpacks and wiring, just after i have lunch :)

Good man, any help is of assistance and ive generally got no idea...

Yes, same thing.

The compression is also fine mate, motor is a LITTLE tired but its fine.

As much is to be expected from an old motor, it will still do what an internally stock RB should do if you keep up the maintenance as you should.

    • Yes, but it's not as easy as pulling a fuse on anything other than an R32. There's a routine you have to do, involving disconnecting a loom plug and bleeding down the preload.
    • A question for tuning awd, is it possible to disable the AWD? The stagea is an EA/T AWD, Toshi had said on a GTR, he was able to disable it and make it 2wd. Just wanted to double check if this was possible
    • Whoa, that's a name I've not see for a long time! Sorry to hear about the engine / turbo damage.  Fwiw with any engine problems it often really a case of just seeing what happens when it's apart, ymmv - I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the damage isn't even from the turbo failure, or possibly from a combination.  The airflow between cylinders isn't dead even, injectors can go off over time as well, with the turbos overboosting if you didn't have upgraded fuel system there could have possibly been a bit of leaning out - stock triggering is often a bit unreliable by this age too.  Basically its an old engine and a few things could have been going on, and you won't know how much work is needed until the engine is apart.
    • I'm just shocked there's a euro driver on our roads who is thinking of other road users and not attempting to blind everyone. I wonder if Prank uses his indicator too...
    • Its hard to tell really. The Q50 owner's forum talks about it a lot and has quite a few people directly affected, but no idea what % of cars sold actually had the block replaced. Also, there seem to be 2 distinct issues which both get diagnosed by Infiniti as requiring a block replacement (no wonder they are going broke) 1. "Porous block" where coolant mixes with oil through thin or poorly cast parts of the block 2. Head coolant gallery plugs not sealing. If I was noticing engine coolant loss I'd start with cooling system pressure test (as always) and then I'd pull the cam covers and reseal the coolant gallery plugs on both side before worrying about a potentially porous block.  If neither of those did the trick it would be put in a second hand engine out of japan; I haven't checked pricing but I'm sure there are plenty around by now as they've been in production 10+ years
