Hi all,

Have been considering cutting a little off of the stick in my r33 gtst.

I am not keen on the short shifter kits as they seem to increase the wear on the synchros. I am just keen to have the stick a little shorter. quite happy with the factory throw.

I am using the factory gear knob as i like the factory look. Wondering how much people have cut off and still been able to use the factory knob. did you have to re thread it? any pics would be great

thanks

my car has had a short shifter for at least 7 years, and it was in it when it landed in aus

it was a nismo 10% one and about a year ago i threw in a c's shifter as it's 33% less than stock

gearbox is still together and it gets abused

When I bought my 32 the previous owner had cut down the stick and it was horrible. Got myself a C's shifter when I still had the RB20 box and reused it on the RB25 box, have driven a car with a Nismo short shifter and it's got nothing on the C's.

I 'short shifted' my stock shifter. Its a bit of a pain if you want to do it the way i did it or theres an easy way. The stock shifter has a shaft coming out of the gearbox, then the actual shifter where your gear knob bolts on is seperated from this by a section of rubber.

What I did was cut the outer shifter part near where the tapered section starts at the top and near the bottom of this part as well, threw away the bit in the middle then welded the two together. Then put some sikaflex down inside the outer part and stuck it back over the shaft that comes out of the box (all this was done out of the car of course lol)

the other way Ive heard of is just to pull the outer part of the shifter off, remove all the rubber and just put a thread on the inner shaft so you can just put the gear knob straight on that. I havent done this, just had someone told me thats how they were gonna do it. Not sure if it needs machining or is the right size already but yeah

As for short shifters wrecking your gearbox..... If you cant drive with a short shifter it might but other then that it will be fine

I thought the whole wear on the synchros by the short shifters was a bit of a bullshit myth that hasn't been proven? Kind of like the no BOV killing turbo thing...

nah, it's definitely easier to crunch gears with a short shifter... but that's about it....

i dont like the idea of short shifters, i like to know exactly where the shifter is going instead of relying on a mechanism in the center to decide.

I only shortened mine cause i think they look stupid standard lol... for a sports car they are way to long

what gear know are you running? the standard one is pretty tall but the nismo ones sit all the way down on the thread

I really hated how far away the shifter was from the wheel with the cut one

that's why i run a dildo know with a c's kit.... near the wheel and still a decent throw
