Gah...apparently the car wasn't ready this Arvo. I only found out when I was halfway there on the train and rang them up. Apparently they can't get the fuel mixture right so its going on the dyno tomorrow...they better not charge me extra!! They want my new Denso plugs too...that means I need another set for the tune in 2 weeks time?

why?

If you are referring to the IKH22 iridium plugs, well they are longer lasting than platinum plugs and provide a superior spark. No chance they will need replacing in 2 weeks.

Unless they are heavily fouled or damaged somehow.

Will they get fouled on the dyno?

Anyway since I'm going to be putting in larger injectors before the tune, they new plugs might get fouled then since the car will not be running the correct fuel mixture...until its on Cihan's dyno.

I'll get another set just in case...

nah they wont man. Cihan will just rev it out after leaning the mixture. it should clean the plugs like it did mine.

the only reason mine are failing is because they are a 1.1mm.. you shouldnt have an issue.

i dont understand.. there is nothing to tune with these gas setups.. they use the factory ECU nothing more.. the only adjustment is the nozzle on the gas injectors.. (i could be wrong though i dont think so).. though i guess they might need to put it on the dyno to confirm the nozzle sizes..

btw make sure you get a power run too one on gas and one on petrol! :)

you were quoted right?

if its a quote, its a quote. u gave them the job, give them cash n are expected to do a good job.

yeah I was quoted $4700 same as Sage222. Haven't paid yet but what's to stop the bastards from saying "oh we had to do this and this so here's the bill"...u know typical mechanics LOL

quotes a quote. if you have it in writing then thats it.

if anything else has to be done you should be notified of what why and how much before its done.

other wise consumer affairs.

The gas injectors run off the pulse from the stock injector, they are set for X milliseconds. If you run a larger injector you may need to recalibrate thre gas system as the pulse would have to be half as long and perhaps the jet twice as big. It would have been better to do the gas afterward I think.

How difficult is it going to be for me to change the injectors over ironpaw? Are the gas ones going to get in the way?

lol... looks like Scotty's quote just went up

GODDAMMIT. They did it again.

Rang them @ 3pm. They said car will be ready in an hour.

I hop on the train to Frankston. 1/2 way there they call me and say "hmmm we need more dyno time to fine tune it blah blah blah, come get the car tomorrow..."

FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They also said they'll be doing more dyno time on a 4wd dyno...I told them before that its a 4wd car....and yet they stick it on a rwd dyno? :spank:

I better get my car back tomorrow...

I hope you aren't paying for their incompetence... Tell them not to bother and you will bring it back after the tune for a touch up? Or just ask them how they are tuning the mixtures and Cihan can do it on his dyno.

that aint good mate. they had my car 4 days.. they were always very good with me mate and even though they took much longer with my car than they thought they still charged me what they quoted.

granted i wouldnt want to be f*kt around too.. tho ill take the guy saying its ready then saying its not 100 times over rather than get my car back and find out it isnt right..

yeah just came home from Frankston. Car runs great - its a pretty neat install. ASked about upgrading petrol injectors and he said you just need to unbolt the fuel rail and move the gas jets out of the way.

Ended up paying the original price of $4700 - no mention of extra $$$ needed at all. Pretty happy in that regards. This includes getting my Denso plugs installed for free...lol

Original spark plugs didn't look like they were covered in oil...and the guy who changed them didnt recall oil in the plug holes...so I guess thats a plus. Are the OEM plugs NGK?

performance wise I can't tell a difference...will need to get it on a dyno and see. There's a button to press to switch it from petrol to gas so that'll be handy. Also with the auto switch over when gas runs out - it'll beep for 5 seconds before the switch takes place...

Scott will get a good look at it tomorrow :P

    • R12 has not been not available for....decades now. Propane is not a great replacement. (I mean, it's a great replacement, but it is a bit too flammable). R134a being the only way to go forward with an R12 system. The design pressures etc, are close enough to R12's to work. The ability to move heat around is close enough to R12's to work.
    • Out of curiosity, what's the reason for converting? I think @R3N3 might have the Frenchy's kit in the R33? I somehow think of you as the ambassador for realistic and clean street-driven setups nowadays
    • careful when running the car after a boil over. Ive heard you can lose enough coolant that it won't show the right temps because of too much air in the system (or something like that). Make sure the levels are good before trying again.  Maybe a mobile mechanic can come have a look with their scan tool ?
    • OK, just for some extra clarity - there is more than one option at Frenchy's. 1. You can buy the whole kit - with or without the actual compressor. The whole kit includes mounts, hoses, condensor, etc. That's either ~$2200 or ~$2800. No surgery required with this option. 2. You can buy just the bracket (~$600), or the bracket with the compressor (~$1200). Either of this or the above option "without the compressor" is if you already have an Echo comp or you are able to source one locally. Whatever the case, in this option, you will need surgery done on your hoses to adapt to the new compressor. When I said "the Frenchy's kit", I meant the whole kit in option 1. It is obviously somewhat more $$ than a $1500 OEM compressor. But if I had to spend $1500 on an OEM compressor, I would certainly consider spending double that to renew and significantly update everything forward of the firewall. Another option is to rebuild your original compressor. My R34 comp is currently dead and I will be most likely doing that to it if the spare one in the shed is also leaky.
    • I’m thinking that’s the route I’ll  go, thanks for the input!
