Hi all,

After many years of modifying commodores and old holdens, I'm finally making the move to a skyline.

I've been looking at some r33 GTR's. I have my eye on one in particular, its neat clean and no mod's.

After test driving it I was surprised how mellow the gtr really was, as being the king of all cars, maybe I was expecting to much.

This has not detered me at all as I know the potential of the gtr's. And the gtr I drove was completely standard.

I'm researching my options to start mods as I'm considering the difference between buying an already mod'd gtr instead.

What I'm after is sumthing eye opening, something that will smoke majority of the young commodore driving hoons and still be reliable enough to drive everyday.

So tell me how far can a standard rb26 go. Thinking of upgrading turbo's (as research tells me standard turbo's are not ideal for more boost than factory setting), Intercooler, and a ECU and tune.

What would you giys suggest is a good upgrade and good guidelines to follow?

Buy one already modded. To replace turbos its basically an engine out job. Ive built 1 big power rb26 419kw bg money ran 10.98 1/4 mile.

Sold it for half what it cost to build.

Just bought another GTR stock but with steel wheel turboes. Have tuned it up makin 285kw on 18psi. 2nd run at the drags ran 11.7. So that shows a stock rb26 with basically stock everythin can perform very well. Not many young street commodore hoons can run under 12sec 1/4s

Work out how much you want, what your budget is...

Then read that thread and workout the costs based on the parts required.

You'll soon see a pretty regular theme with either Garrett -9s or Garrett -5's being used depending on what you want (and there is a 10+ page thread dedicated to those turbos already) :laugh:

I don't know but having owned more than a dozen GTRs of every type from 32-35 I can tell you all of them (apart from the 35) are pretty sedate to drive in standard form. they make around 180kw at the wheels standard, and have way more grip than they do power. yes they handle quite nicely and will get around a track quite well but the acceleration feels pretty pedestrian. the good news is that just by doing:

Power FC and tune

boost controller set to 14-15psi (max)

adjustable cam gears (get tuned together with the boost and the power FC)

cat back 3.5inch exhaust

pod filters or high flow panel filter

your GTR will be making around 230-250rwkw and will be running mid-high 12s. plus it will now sound great, and feel much more exciting to drive. that's a lot of extra power for bugger all money. the downside is that to go any higher you will need:

larger injectors

new turbos (expensive and a fair bit of labour too)

front pipes (and dumps too if you want to get the most out of things)

oil cooler

new afms are a good idea (bigger ones)

better clutch (stock one is not good over 230kw really)

some handling upgrades to make it fun to drive with more power

more tuning

upgraded fuel pump

and the lists go on and on. but by now you'll have over 300kw and a very fast car, but it's by no means cheap any more.

personally I'd consider buying one already modded but get it checked out by a reputable performance workshop that knows what they are doing and can spot the poorly modded cars from the good ones.
