has anyone installed an aftermarket headunit ?

if so how much did it cost you and are you still able to use the original screen ?

You should do a search at the bottom of the forums page - there are plenty of topics on this.

That's a DIY one. Which "headunit" are you referring to? There's the double-DIN One that sits on your centre-console and there's the DVD-rom that sits above your glove compartment. Mine are still stock, however from what I've seen you definitely can use the OEM screen. I think Chris Rogers is the best person to ask, PM him if you like. Otherwise if you're from Perth, contact Brian Wallis from Autotainment.

I have had an aftermarket HU installed by Chris Rogers (a nice Clarion). I got the centre console trim and AC controls from the USA. He installed it along with the alarm. I don't have the screen so I can't help you there.

I just got my new headunit put in by "Owen in Cronulla" ;-) via Chris Rogers.

Car: HV35, 2001.

Factory: BOSE double-DIN with 4 speakers and subwoofer. Steering wheel controls.

Aftermarket in Japan: Mitsubishi TV and navigation unit.

Replaced with: basic Clarion unit with USB iPod interface.

The Works:

Replace the controls/centre dash section with Japan-imported parts. Now I had a 1-DIN hole for the headunit and a 1-DIN pocket, topped by a little flappy/pockety section replacing the gash where the TV was.

(Had to give up the dual climate control function, which I never used anyway. I suppose I could have ordered some other replacement buttons set? Such is life!)

Cabled the USB female connector to the centre console glovebox. Plug in a standard iPod/iPhone cable for some Apple action.

(The Clarion has silly controls for iPod, and the "use iPod's controls" function doesn't work for me, but I haven't really debugged that yet).

Hooked the Clarion headunit, via adaptor, to the BOSE 4 x speakers and 1 x subwoofer.

And once I have the extra-extra adaptor, the new Clarion headunit will be controllable by the factory steering wheel controls.

Very happy. Minor debugging to occur one day when I next go past Cronulla.
