Just curious on what everyone's opinion of the best P plate legal track car there is out there.

The criteria is:

1. Must be p-plate legal.

2. Must be affordable by your typical 18-21yo enthusiast. No S2000s, or track dedicated cars with trailers and separate daily drivers.

3. Must be a good car to actually learn in. No automatic cars, etc.

Modifications are allowed if they're reasonable and apart of the affordable budget (say 10-15k, bonus points for going cheap). Things I'm looking for are decent brakes, power, weight, handling, whether or not it has an LSD, etc.

I'm not actually looking to buy another car, I'm just bored and figured I try get some discussion going on the NA boards beyond which exhaust should I buy or how can I get more NA power.

Toyota AE86 Sprinter with the 4age 16v.

RWD platform, light weight, high revving motor, good aftermarket support, use it for drift or circuit depending on setup. Cheap to maintain, cheap to repair, good street cred

Mr2's handle like ass, and not really something a novice could drive quick without going off the track backwards every 2nd lap.

Best bet would be MX5, AE86s require to much work to be really quick on a circuit, 944's are horridly expensive to maintain,

Early 1st Gen RX7's like to break gearboxes and diffs so would require expensive aftermarket gear to be reliable

NA S13 is another option, cheap as and no-one would care if you stuck it into a wall.

an Early Ex-tarmac rally escort with rego would be fun.

haha fair enough, I drove a TRD 4AGZE MR2 when i was on my P's (fair few years ago now), was a mad fun car just had to be really quick and confident on the wheel.

yeah I know what you mean, have a look at MR2 track day photos, 90% of the cars are covered in dirt and mud from going off the track, the few cars that aren't dirty weren't trying hard enough lol

R34 GT-V manual.

- Take out all seats

- Put some nice light weight wheels

- Heavy duty clutch

- Upgrade suspension

- High flow panel filter and cat

- External oil cooler

- Bigger radiator

- Thermo fans

- Catch can

- Light weight bonnet of some description

- Sticky tires

- Premium fluids

If budget permits

- Carbon driveshaft

- Light weight flywheel

- Slotted rotors

Trying to keep it legal with minimal mods.

Reasoning behind the R34

- Parts are readily available

- Lots of support from SAU

- Big brakes and LSD

- Ridgid body

- RB25DE NEO has reasonable torque and seems to rev out much faster (more responsive) than the older non NEO engines.

On a serious note.

- Keeping it legitimately street legal means you have to keep stock ECU (no nistune or anything like that) therefore - minimal mods

- The trick to anything being tracked is:

- Reliability.

- Being able to keep the engine within the powerband.

- Good brakes.

- Limited slip diff.

My friend's foster father has an old Peugeot 205 for track duties - his mods:

- Sparco driver's seat with harness

- Rear seat removed.

- Front passenger seat is removable.

- Battery moved to the back.

- Stripped out interior. All that remains is the climate control panel and cheap single din radio with 2 front speakers

- Runs on stock wheels with Dunlop semi slicks

- 1/2 cage

- Slotted rotors at the front with stock rotors on the rear

- Stock brakes with premium pads all round

- Koni shocks

- Larger radiator with twin thermo fans

- High flow filter and extractors (some other zorst work to I think)

- Stock engine

    • Hows your intake piping? Are you still running stock? Having in the stock AFM position would mean, if the BOV was shut/venting out, it'd create the almost stalling kind of effect right // "the rich pulse behaviour" due to MAF thinking air is flowing ? But this would be better than having the bov in the stock position + MAF on/just before cross over piping right?
    • Essentially, yes. Although I wouldn't put the AFM on the crossover pipe. I'd want to put it into what amounts to the correct size tube, which is more easily done in the intercooler pipework. I bought a mount tube for card stile AFM that replaces the stock AFM - although being a cheap AliExpress knockoff, it had not flange and I had to make and weld my own. But it is the same length and diameter as the stock RB AFM, goes on my airbox, etc etc. I don't have a sick enough rig to warrant anything different, and the swap will take 5 minutes (when I finally get around to it and the injectors & the dyno tune).
    • So to summarise, the best thing to do is to move recirc to between turbo and IC, and maf on the crossover pipe. Meaning I'd need a recirc flange, drill a hole in the piping on turbo outlet area. And drill hole on crossover to fit/weld maf sensor? Either that or put the MAF on the turbo inlet right?  Is an aftermarket recirc/blowoff valve recommended? Do currently have family in Japan so could probably bring something back with maybe a cheeky lil SuperAutobacs run?
    • Yep, so far most have said that it looks like corrosion on the wall from piston not moving. Which then has probably damaged the oil rings and caused those vertical marks. The longest the engine was still after the rebuild, was the winter of 2018 - 2019, plus the boat trip to Japan. When I shipped the car, it had normal gas in the tank but before that winter pause, it had E85 in tank.  In any case, even if either one of those was the cause, it happened close to 6 years ago and the car has been driven something like 30 000kms after the fact. Again, apart from the plugs and the dip stick, there is nothing in the way the car runs that would indicate what has been going on in the engine. I am going to consult a shop and ask their opinion, what would be the best approach. I do have some access to a garage I could use to diagnose further myself, but time is very restrictive. Might end up buying another engine that could be used while this one is being remedied. Without pulling the head, it will be impossible to find out if it needs another bore, but here's to hoping a hone would suffice.  Goddamnit, I would really have preferred this not happening.  
    • Boot is going to be replaced eventually. I just wire brushed what I could and rust converted. Then painted in rust kill primer. the spoiler also got repainted and plugs replaced on the ends. The under side of the bonnet is going to be black also, currently white. But red on the top side, same colour code as the silo to begin.
