I'm open to suggestions for other cars so bring 'em on. Been considering an R32 GTR as well. Any massive don'ts on a $15,000 GTR?

um yeah. don't buy a $15,000 GTR and expect it to be a 'cheap' car. I'd go as far to say don't buy a $15K GTR full stop. unless you really know GTRs or plan to build a race car etc.

and it won't be any torquier under 2,000rpm than your S14. in fact standard GTR is quite laggy. even stock the fun is not on till 4,500rpm or so.

stock for stock you wont notice the difference between vvti and non. many mons ago i raced a vvti with my non vvti and it was pretty much a dead heat (as it should be). remember even the non vvti starts boosting at 1.5k.

personally i think your better of with a clean optioned up 95 with a non vvti engine but all the late model perks (bigger brakes, recaros etc).

if you ever plan on going single then scrap the vvti completely as there is very little aftermarket knowledge and most end up turning it off. remember supras were designed for the US market and they have modified them for every concivable thing from road racing to 185mph texas mile 1200hp straight line fear. also the US didnt get the vvti model only JDM hence there is very little way of keeping vvti when modifying. it can be done but make sure you have very deep pockets.

either way you wont be dissapointed and when you have over 400rwkws without building the motor while remaining reliable enough for daily driving...you wont stop :D

kristian. you. me. kitchen. talk. now.

hahah

and yes it's true.. only knobs drive soarers.

in all honesty - you probably shouldn't have said you're "open to suggestion" to cars in a thread that i'm reading. because i'll talk the leg off a chair.

i'll keep my opinions simple for you.. and TRY not to bore you

i got my car yesterday by the way.. soarers were a popular import from the mid 1990's up through to about maybe 2005 then dropped off the radar really - mainly because as their value dwindled.. as did their target market.. the biggest problem with soarers is they are now usually seen blowing bright blue smoke out of their exhausts being driven by a somalian with a hat to the side playing 10 year old DMX music.

but - there ARE gems out there. what you're craving would be fixed by a VVT soarer (so i beleive)

first of all, read this paragraph:

The high-performance turbocharged version uses a 2.5 litre straight six (coded 1JZ-GTE). Early models are fitted with parallel twin turbochargers which give 206kW at 6200 rpm and 363Nm at 4800 rpm. Unfortunately, the TT engine is quite doughy at the bottom end of the rev range - the transmission’s torque converter needs to flare to get the engine revving (a trait that becomes tiresome, especially when a loud aftermarket exhaust is fitted). A 5-speed manual gearbox was fitted to a small number of examples.

that was penned by autospeed about 5 years ago.. then: read this article

http://autospeed.com/cms/title_The-Highest...57/article.html

to summarize - after mid 1996 the soarer went to a single turbo VVTi motor, torque was doubled.. and found at 2400RPM instead of 5000RPM

power was increased. fuel consumption was pretty much halved.

to summarize, the VVTi 1JZ has a HUGE difference.. the VVTi 2JZ not so much..

in addition to this the whole range got a facelift and certain "quivles" were fixed and revised.

priced for these vary like mental. i don't want to even tell you difference between the soarer i just bought my parents vs the soarer i just bought me.. but put it bluntly.. both my soarers were imported WELL under your budget.

and to summarize..

soarer - you get pretty much every luxury feature imaginable

here's what is sitting in my driveway now..

I think if 'coq' factor is a problem for you most imports aren't so great... I could live with a Soarer if it were great to drive. Still gonna aim for a Supra but if I can't muster any more funds soon it sounds like a good alternative.

Has anyone here driven a twin turbo Mitsubishi GTO? Might just be thinking out loud but I've seen late 90s models around the $15k mark before. I'd imagine they'd use a ton of fuel though being so heavy. And so complicated they might be hard to keep going.

Edit:

Not planning on modifying too heavily. It'll be a daily so will do a better but not too loud exhaust and maybe some minor stuff around the engine but not huge. I'd like to do some Tein EDFC in the future when finances permit.

Just want to add left field choice...

Mitsubishi GTO, Mates got one and it very decently equipped and goes well.

because your limited budget the mitsu might be worth it, but you can get 1997 - 1998 Mitsubishi GTO "updated headlights version" for around 18K in Australia. Also there are shops that will do work on them for reasonable dosh...

on another matter, you Got to be very patient when importing. my car is getting landed in Australia on the 19th Nov, then its waiting still for complance, though this is my second import, so i will

get used to the waiting by now ..oh... how wrong i was

^^^samesies.

i rage quitted after i joined their "cruise" and had a go at them all for dropping skids in front of kids on bikes. and one dipshit in a Z20 decided to try drift around a roundabout n ran into a gutter.

i said to them be careful on cruises last thing we need is attention from police.

that was like throwing a rock at a beehive.

soarer drivers are knuckle dragging mouth breathers. just sayin.

Aside from the atypical owner, Soarers are very good value for what you get. Very capable all rounders (performance-luxury-looks-reliability-cost) and one of the few Jap cars where you won't be cursing the Japanese tradition of designing a car's backseat for kids that never grow up.

^^^ +1

but the conclusion that i've come to notice is - there is a massive soarer revival trend occuring.. but it's quiet and small..

even my broker said yesterday on the phone that when he had the car in his shop, people's jaws would drop and they couldn't beleive that it was a soarer of all things

infact yesterday i was out front and this guy in a van stopped outside my house with his family and started telling me how much he absolutely LOVES our soarers and how he's always been into imports ever since we've had "the orange" 180 parked outside ten years ago..

he said he just bought an aristo a few months back from Jspec but said that if he had've known soarers could be like that then he would've got one - true story.

but anyway.. conclusion i've come to is - if people like soarers, great.. if they think they are boats and dirty old ho-hum imports then that's their opinion.. i'll just wind up my electric seats tilt my electric sunroof and drive away smiling while they sit there and curse their broken silvia :D

only a late model V8. :D

actually there's this one for sale - UZZ32 active with 106xxx genuine km.. only mods are - brand new headlights and tail lights from toyota... and a 97 body conversion

for those of you unfamiliar with soarers, the UZZ32 is the rarest of the build codes, only a run of about 700 odd i beleive. toyota were losing money on each one sold apparently.. active suspesnion, 4 wheel steering, reverse cameras.. these guys had it all!!!

sorry to go off topic from supras - i'm just mkaing the point that soarer are definitely the underdog - not all soarers are driven by some 17 year old somalian kid wearing RuffRyder clothing.

^I prefer a LS400/Celsior over a soarer. More usability.

BTW V8 as a daily isn't as stupid as you think... Get a LS400 - built like tanks, srsly. Dad had someone rear end him between 80-100kmh and he was stationary, and he didnt even get whiplash... (206 GTI hit him)=, they wrote it off from a financial point of view cause the car is worth so little and the panels were pushed a few mm at each back door)

So impressed, bought another one. Last tank, did 11.2L/100km around town. <Paid $7800 for a 1998 LS400 from the UK (minimal rust, mostly on exhaust mufflers) - 131k miles, engine is so quiet, just the other day at the fuel station, he turned it on, put seatbelt on, then tried to turn it on again....

lol let me guess. dark green 1992 V8 that's got three oem wheels and one wheel that has an inexplicable hubcap?

lol nah, its a silver V8 uzz30 with EMV and speedy mesh wheels lol 91 or 92 model.

does look nice i'll admit but typical soarer owner lol.

There are plenty of those around Canberra though, Dark green or dark blue UZZ30s with bald tyres, broken exhaust hangers cracked front bars.

Oh PS how much for that UZZ32?

    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all! • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.
    • Hope the cans went down well at least
    • 255 can't go wrong with the price.
    • When I was replacing my pump due to being stranded in the wrong state, I went with the Deatschwerks 320lph kit. It is a direct plug in to the stock wires, harness, everything. It comes with a plug... but you can plug the OEM plug directly into this thing. https://justjap.com/products/deatschwerks-dw300-fuel-pump-nissan-s13-silvia-r32-r33-r34-skyline-c34-stagea?currency=AUD Downside: Won't actually flow that much on boost if you want to push it on E85, but it's comparable to the 040/255 etc. Little more actually.
