trappedunderice
i've never owned a turbo before so i was hoping someone could help me out a little.. im running a completely stock 34 gt-t and sometimes on ignition the boost gauge won't move, not even a slight fluctuation, today i was driving and the gauge had been sitting on nothing, then doing 60 it suddenly jumped to about midway up the gauge, stayed at that pressure for 10 seconds, then dropped disturbingly quickly back to 0, im not sure whether it's because i've only started looking at the boost gauge while driving that i've noticed it goes for ages without moving from 0, i can hear the whirring/spooling? sound but without gunning it, cant tell wether it's active. i had a major service (smooth garage) and immbolizer installed friday if thats relevant at all.. basically i'm dumb, is there something wrong? or is that normal behaviour? only just bought it, i'll be pissed if it's already playing up. is my best bet getting a compression test? cheers guys Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/340898-faulty-turbo/ Share on other sites

dark.sky
34's quite often have dodgey sender units dont they? If that is indeed what it is, dont panic at all, its a 30 second fix. BTW, to the best of my knowledge, a turbo wont intermittently boost, it either will, or wont, not both. jrm
I recently re-soldered the dry joints on normsta's boost sender that was doing the same thing. If you're comfortable with a soldering iron, it's about a 15 minute job to take it out, hit it with the soldering iron and put it back in. The other thing that normally breaks about the same time is the vacuum hose back to the plenum. It'll often crack when you try and pull the sender out to replace anyway. I'd suggest try changing the vacuum hosing and then if that doesn't fix it, look at hitting up those dry solder joints. It's the three main ones coming back to the plug. There's a thread on it somewhere if you hit up search. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/340898-faulty-turbo/#findComment-5502942 Share on other sites
trappedunderice
don't have the tools or knowledge by the sounds of things, i'll have to take it back to smooth garage. bye bye wages! thankyou for your help everyone Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/340898-faulty-turbo/#findComment-5502960 Share on other sites

dark.sky
Its 2 bolts, a plug, and a vacuum line to get off. Right next to the brake booster, possibly the easiest thing on the car to get off Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/340898-faulty-turbo/#findComment-5503005 Share on other sites

trappedunderice
i'm in croydon, i found a tutorial about resoldering the three joins on the chip above the front right tire, scared about messing with it, it's under a three month warranty, doubtful but would that cover this? jrm
yeah take it to Jenna save some money and she can show you some things about your car uhhh .. what's a car .. I'm just a girl i'm in croydon, i found a tutorial about resoldering the three joins on the chip above the front right tire, scared about messing with it, it's under a three month warranty, doubtful but would that cover this? You could ask them - couldn't hurt to give it a shot. It's pretty easy to do if you have access to a 10mm spanner to unbolt it, and a soldering iron to re-flow the three joins though The hardest part is undoing the damn clips around the edge of the sensor, I always struggle with that bit. trappedunderice
managed to get a hold of a soldering iron but i can't seem to get the boost unit case open, i don't want to crack or break it but can't seem to find a way of getting it off edit: i mean the larger case just above the right wheel, not the part sitting above the engine Edited October 18, 2010 by trappedunderice Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/340898-faulty-turbo/#findComment-5503254 Share on other sites
