so i posted a update on facebook asking a simple question of what people thought, was a smarter buy, a '00 gtt r34 or a 08 impreza wrx hatch, factoring in price difference to durability and all i got was people telling me to buy a v8 and calling me a pussy and all sorts of words. saying skylines are slow.. there for 'wogs', everyone has one, the usual ignorant babble.

just wondering what you guys thought of my question? would the maintanance of an older car cost more then the price difference of a newer car. ill be buying one of them next year around this time, im expecting 16000 for the skyline and around 25000 for the wrx, i like the skyline alot more but scared i will be forever fixing things racking up bills.

plus, does anyone else get crusified for liking something other then aussie made? i dont understand why people get up in arms about it? or is it just the illawarra?

Depends on a few things

how long do u expect to own the car for?

What sort of driving? Pleasure car or every day driver for work etc?

Id say skyline but if you plan to own the car for 5+ years and drive it everyday then from a cost base situation you would go with the new car. (Fueld economy etc)

If money is not an issue go with the one u like =D

If you dont wanna break anything keep your current Camry.

WRX's have glass gearboxes and clutches, the wheel bearings die all the time etc.

R34s well coil packs, turbos etc all go, depends on how you drive it.

Newer car is a much better option really.

Nothing wrong with a VY SS commodore, reliable as and heaps of support (eg you can go to supercheap auto to gets parts for it)

I would personally go WRX, because I used to rally a non turbo Subaru, but they are very fragile. GTT I would always wish I had just bought a GTR. Commodore, NO, they are shit, they rattle, they are badly built, they can go well, but that is IT, the manual is so bad to use you will wish it was auto, the auto is a clunky old slush box that you cant drive with any real passion... The reasons continue.. Consider an Evo.. Best value toy out right now

i bought a commodore, it was the most unreliable car i've ever had. Pretty much started to fall apart from the moment i got it. I bought the commodore because it was cheaper to run overall than a turbo jap car but it ended up costing nearly the same. I always wanted a turbo jap car so the commodore only lasted me a year and i sold it and bought a R34 and i've had it for around 4 years now and still love it. It's very reliable and has never broken down in 4 years, just fix the common faults and keep it serviced and your good to go.

Bottom line is buy what car you want and you'll be happy and keep it for longer. Buy something else because someone told you or its a cheaper option and you'll still be dreaming about the car you really want.

well i have a r33 and a vz commy the r33 is for weekends and the commy is the daily both have there good and bad points but both have been very realiable . just buy what suits your needs tell people to bugga off if the dont like it .

cheers dean

Pfft, no matter what you buy you'll always have haters.

Buy what suits YOU and YOUR needs, and just be prepared to have spare money for parts, labour, servicing, insurance, fuel, etc. As long as you know you're covering your costs and you like driving your car, then it's all worth it.

I've had my Stagea for 5 years now, and even though it has had problems (and there are still a few issues here and there), I love just about every moment I spend driving it. Yes, the suspension is bumpy; yes, it drinks fuel at a pretty heavy rate; yes, I'm often wary of where I can leave it; etc., but I've never regretted buying it.

I've got a MASSIVE list of other cars that I'd also love to own, but I can't see myself selling this car any time soon, and I can't honestly justify owning two cars.

go to a few dealers and test drive a few cars WRX and Skyline, and you will know in your gut what car you want

you can have a look at other cars as well that are fun EVO8, V35 skyline, Stagea, test drive them all and then make a decision, i was looking at the exact same 2 cars and i test drove my mates V35 and just had to get one 2, i got a 2004 V35 for 28K and is confortable and luxurious for every day and has a kick to it when i want it to and a big + is most parts are same as 350Z so preaty easy to find. Comodores? i would not even look at. Unless its brand new and even then the cost of a service thru holden is a joke.

Thanks all for your input.

I've never even thought of owning a Holden. My father is an ex mechanic and has told me how bad they are and i don't think I'd be aloud home if I got one haha. But some people like them so good on them.

Yeah that's a great idea to test drive them. Probs have to go to Syd to find skyline in a car yard. Never seen one down here in a dealers yard hah.

The car would be used to drive me to and from work. I'd drive it fairly tame and on the road I just want a bit of a kick here and there and maybe a few track days here and there. I mainly want the subaru turbod because the rs 08 looks like a bit of a womens car to me. Although I am still looking to buy it anyway. Not to sure what I'll buy but these comments have given me some great ideas. Tha ks everyone :ermm:

Jarrad.

I've owned a 02' monaro ..................... and ever since then.. i've had 2 r33's ..... 350z and now i own a r34... and it shits on all the cars ive' had......... ESPECIALLY the monaro.. my god was that thing a boat to drive.. and my god did that thing drink.. and my god did that thing break down on me..

Demographic/geographic links are apparently generating a culture of Fords S-W of Sydney; Holdens W of Sydney and Illawarra? You'd know perhaps?

Are you a fashion follower - or a fashion leader?

Budget of $22K mid 2011?

Service specialists in your area?

Step outside the square and check out the...

* MY07WRX > Service at Pulse Racing Menai 9543.5007

* R33 GT-R > Service at Autosport Engineering Kirrawee 9521.1388

* BMW 328Ci > Service at BMV Engineering Caringbah 9526.1855

* Honda S2000 > Service at Hannys Performance Smithfield 9725.5115

* Supra 2JZ-GTE > Service at Autosport Eng (above)

And don't let up until you find the one you want!!!! Take a trusty mechanic and panelbeater with you when you're getting serious!

The man with the money can dictate terms! Make the salesman beg! Make him throw in a major service into the bargain! :P

your first mistake was asking morons on facebook their opinion

your next one was asking model specific opinions on a model specific car forum

I just laugh at people who think commodores are actually a sports car :P

Yeah it's definately Holden culture down here.

Are those service places specialised in those types of cars do you mean?? I will have a look around. I'm new to performance cars so it'll be hard for me to be sure what's a good buy. I'm sure I'll look for a mechanic down here to come with me. But that's next year haha. Thanks for the help mate

Jarrad.

Those specialist places are regarded as amongst the best in their field pertaining to the type of car to the left hand side of that same line. Hope that makes sense.

I've only mentioned places that I know of closest to you. For instance, if you were getting a Beemer and you lived at Hornsby, I would have suggested BMWise at Artarmon instead of BMV Eng. Or if you were getting a GT-R and you lived at Parramatta, I'd be recommending Unigroup Eng. at Girraween instead of Autosport Eng.

The places mentioned will gladly put a potential buy up on a hoist for you if required. It can be worth the extra bit of money! :P

Jarrad,

Honestly, just have a look around. I know it's biased, but all the people telling you to get a Commodore are just bogans, and down in the Illawarra, we're rife with them. I copped a fair bit of shit when I bought my R33, but then I realised that it's not my fault that their IQ is stuck by default to room temperature, so I'll just have to ignore them.

I still get P-Platers in VR commodores trying to run me; just easier to ignore and go about my business.

I've had my R33 for almost 4 years now, and while it's been a love/hate relationship (I'm hating that I'm gonna have to rip the engine out soon), all in all, the only thing I wish I'd bought other than this is a 34, although never would have found one in the colour I want :P

tl;dr: get what YOU wanna get, f**k everyone else. Most issues with Skylines are pretty easy-ish to fix, and if you end up getting one, happy to help out where I can.

Alright sweet man I'll look into those places. So there specilist mechanics thatservice cars but they also sell cars tht they've worked on??

Hah Owen so true. Best dude! Always been so nice to me. Two thumbs up man.
