Hello.

I'm in the throws of building up a R32 GTR for street use, and hopefully a few track days when I get the chance.

I've bought and paid for the majority of my 'supporting mods' and while slowly buying up all of that good stuff i've been researching the dreaded question of turbo choice.

If someone says use the search button, feel free to come see me for a slapping, I've worn the search button out - all I've done now is added more options into the equation haha.

I will be looking to net somewhere in the 420-500rwhp mark.

I have a couple of mates running GT35R/3582/whatever else you call them turbos in .82 rears on RB26s. Once is making a bit over 500rwhp and the other is sitting on 460 or 470rwhp. The only difference setup wise that I'm aware of is the step 2 HKS cams in the 500+ hp car. Other than that everything is very very similar.

I've pretty much copied their setups, ecu, manifold, injectors, blah blah.... but I'm thinking I want a bit more response and I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of top end power for it.

Options floating around in my rather empty head so far are:

Garret 3076 .82

Garret 3082 .82

Garret 3582 .63 or .82

Precision 5557 .82

Precision 6262 .63 or .82

Holset HX35 | 35/40 | HX40

Turbonetics 60-1 fullsize .63

Turbonetics 62-1 fullsize .63

Of course T04Z and Nitto 3.2L kit would be nice, but I'm trying to keep things 'reasonable' for now...

Now that I'm swimming with ideas if anyone has any input, help, experiences that might help - I'd love to hear them.

PS... won't be going twins, once that atrocity of a twin turbo system comes off it stays off :laugh:

500rwhp = GT35 .82

The other turbos really have not a lot of documentation/testing around the parts.

So you can either go with the proven, or be a pioneer and be prepared to be changing turbos etc should it not be good enough/what you want.

Even without 500rwhp i will highly recommend the GT3582R. Its a very street able turbo IMO

A friend of mine had a built R32 GTR with HKS GT2530 low mounts and even he conceeded that he preferred my set up. Everything from power delivery to the drivability of it around town

Of course, a GT35 will make less power than 2530's, they are not the same.

2530's will do over 400rwkw on PULP, a GT35 sits around 370rwkw on most.

not really apples with apples.

Must be something wrong with the tuner. His made 325rwkw on 21psi....

Any one else had trouble with the cartriges in 35R's failing? I like the idea of one for mine rather than going up to -5s but Noel just destroyed his 4th one and another guy up here is also on his 5th! Just wondering if this is common or if this is a rarity

Totally depends on the reason for the failures, if they are recurring it would suggest perhaps other issues.

From the pages of these forums, just the "usual" failure rate, rare :worship:

Can't say I've heard of anyone killing GT30/35's here. I did a GT30 one years ago but that was oil related issues so not the turbo.

Very very wrong :)

325rwkw on 21psi is what Garrett -9s make... Not 2530's (-5s) which are a 380rwkw+ (depends on boost etc as too how much.)

GT3582R's seem to do the job ok on RB26's and as has been mentioned no one wants to try a GT3076R in the largest 1.06 A/R turbine housing size .

On paper a GT3076R is good for around 540 hp and I reckon the big turbine housing is what it takes to make the horsepower no ones ever seen from them . I won't guess what the boost threshold a 1.06 GT3076R would be , but since 3076R's and 3582R's use the same turbine housing castings you'd think the 3076R would be a bit more responsive given that you're pushing the same volume of gas through a smaller diameter turbine wheel .

I'm sure I've mentioned it before but there is a sort of in between turbo and naturally its a HKS spec Garrett unit . Been around for ages and is called GT3240 . It consists of a GT35 turbine cropped back to a GT32 sized major diameter and in 84 trim .

The compressor is the 54 trim version of the GT3582R's 56 trim 82mm GT40 wheel .

I reckon that if I got GCG to order me a 52 trim GT3076R'/GT3037 from Japan theres a good chance they could get you the GT3240R's cartridge and compressor housing . HKS only ever used turbine housings supplied by their own people but there is an easy way to get around this problem .

Remember how GT3582R's use essentially bored out GT30 turbine housings ? Well I figure if the 30 housing can be machined to suit a 35 turbine it can be machined to suit the "GT32" sized cropped 35 turbine .

I have seen graphs of GT3240's on 4G63T engines and the peak power was in the 540 ish Hp range .

They were also used on maximum effort drag RB26's twinned and I believe well set up engines were claimed to crank out over 1000 Hp .

For something off the shelf on a T3 mounting flange a std GT3582R is straightforward and the 0.82 and 1.06 turbine housings seem to work well . The question is how important is the turbine response and if it worries you opt for the 0.82 .

I know someone that who has an RB26 in a VLT ad it runs a steam pipe manifold and ext gate with a 1.06 GT3582R . Around town its smooth and tractable and needs to be reved to get it going but its all over the place when it comes on boost . A GTR is a bit heavier than a VLT so maybe the 82 housing would help get the beef moving a little sooner .

Just on that above example it originally had a very lack luster 3" exhaust and a smallish gate and went much better with a larger pipe off the turbo and a larger gate .

It seems it was either this or the HKS GT3037S set up that most of the Drag oriented GTR's tended to run with

Thanks for the input guys.

I was looking closely at some of the 'unknown' items I listed above.. They seem to have the potential to do exactly what I want, but so does everything when you're reading the marketing spiel.

I think for now I'll probably go the GT3582R .82 seeing as I know exactly what they do on a RB26, from peoples experience and my mates car. The 3076 in 1.06 does tickle my fancy as well though.

In the future once the car is ready for me to stop throwing huge amounts of money at it, I might (if the 35R isn't quite right for me) look in to a precision turbo, can't do any harm and may find something great... if not sell it i guess.

Had a koyo rad let go on me today too.... more $$$ hahahaha. Love money pits :(

Hmm.. new question:

Has anyone had any experience with, has any input on a twinscroll T4 1.06 GT3582R...

Can get these from full-race easy enough, 'apparently' better low/mid range power AND top end power....

Seems a little too much like having cake and eating it, but the low/mid response part catches my eye.

looks like its an ATP housing, still the only place that makes them afaik. i recently put one on my 3076 for my 30det. their quality leaves a bit to be desired but so far it seams to be working alright. theres a few little things you'll have to fix up before you fit it but no big deal

Ah righto thanks for the info.

Because it's a 'finished' product from full-race, who as far as I can tell through my endless google-ing are a very reputable company, I'd like to think they're have it delivered ready to rock. We'll see.
