i had a P=Plater in a current shape hilux follow me home after i took him at the lights and i wasnt even trying and i have a 250GT sedan. lucky i have street lights around my area so i turned all my lights off, put the display screen down and ducked in and out through the back streets of my area that i know best.

Wow, scary! Those first year apprentice sparky's are a menace to society. Lucky you went all James Bond on him and got away safely. Did you call the police afterwards and inform them that there are P-platers in hilux's roaming the neighbourhoods at night causing mischief? I would have explained to the police that I was just minding my own business and trying to have a nice safe street race when this maniac started stalking me simply because I beat him in a race, at night, on a public road. Lucky you were able to get away with your life after that and followed the well known police advice, in that situation, of turning your lights off and speeding up.

Actually, now that I think about it, isnt there normally a $500 reward for that in some states.

Yeah i get a few idiots in their done up shitboxes *cough* p plater mirage. Friday nights you get quite a few dropkicks pull up next to you at the lights with a full car, shouting shit at you and generally being an ass hat.

I've also has some little punks pull up next to my car with about 3 of his mates in it and proceed to spit at my window while they speed off in their lowered shitbox of a mobile tin can. That's Sydney for ya.....

Does anyone else get this type of things happening especially from p platers driving crapboxes?

They don't even try to race you they just rev and take off at the lights and weave in and out infront of you. Pisses me off...

Had a few guys in a Mirage or Charade a few years ago giving my mates girlfriend shit as she was in the back seat. A number of lovely remarks and what not, mate kindly asked me to pull over, he jumped out of the car with a tyre iron... Never seen a sh!t box move so fast!

First of all - good thread to come back alive in this section.

Secondly, i get this ALL THE TIME. I live in a mining town, so a lot of young people like myself have money to play with and have expensive cars. I get every type of car try to race me any time of the day, i even get bogans in Patrols and Hiluxes try to race me and it's so frustrating. Also the fact that there's so many P platers driving SV6 commy's and think they're mad with stockies on the back doing sick bruzz burnouts lad. Like many others have said, I don't like thrashing my car because i love it too much and don't want to lose it/my lisense/my life.

One instance i was traveling 2 hours to see my sister and i was on the high way (by myself) music on just relaxing on the drive nek minut i get a black monaro come right up my arse out of nowhere, at this point there was nothing else on the road, and i was about 20 mins away from my destination. The Monaro followed me ALL the way to where i was going with high beams on, blaring the horn, waving out the window trying to get me to pull over and tail gating me. All i did was pull into the cop shop when i got into town and the 2 dickheads f*cked off. Basically, they were going to take my car end of story. This is also another thing we need to be careful of, we drive attractive and reasonably rare cars so essentially we are in the target of cars that are likely to get stolen, so be careful!

But in terms of people trying to race me, i ALWAYS check around where i am constantly for Police. But in saying that i never speed unless i know it's safe and think i have a chance against the car. People bait me daily to race them but i just ignore them. Friday and Saturday nights is the worst especially if i'm driving to my girlfriends or something which is other side of town i will ALWAYS get a car full of people pull up next to me trying to race in a fart can. On the other hand, the attention from the girls isn't too bad when you get a car full of them pull up next to you admiring (gf hates it).

Just the other night i had a car load of morons in a old corolla annoying the f*ck out of me swerving in and out of traffic getting up next to me then accelerating.. it's so pointless they know they have a peice of shit car but still think they're cool in front of their mates. If i punched it past them no doubt with my luck Police would come out of the woodwork and book me so i don't even bother..

Oh yeah friday and saturday nights are the worst (p plater school kids). A few weeks back on a Friday night i had 2 mates in the car around 8pm. We we're going to eat and i stopped at the lights next to some crapbox with 4 teens. They just looked at us, winded down their window and started yelling shit. We just ignored them.

To make matters worse a few hundred meters down the road some guy didn't give way and hit my car which made me spin out. These guys drove past stopped next to us and started yelling shit and laughing then did a mini burnout in their crapbox and drove off.

I really don't understand their logic, why these kids think their so cool crammed in a crapbox with bumpers held together by masking tape.

Edit: and its in most cases a Charade or Mirage. Also love my car too much to make a fuss about it and end up with damages.

That's disgusting man.. i've never had someone abuse me other than that incident i just wrote about. It's usually people admiring or wondering what it is.

Cant say i get it ALL the time because most people in newcastle think my car is a maxima (Including the police) But since i put coilovers in and put spacers man it sits fat as and people especially p platers in the commondores and falcon stare and wonder what the heck is it.

But i also get the occasional VS/VR full of lads with their nikes caps, rattys and all pull up next to me and look and say smart ass comments like "nice rice burner fa**ot" "get a real car ya p**f" which i just pay no attention too......look around for police and undercover cars, put the gear stick to thw side and drop it to first and plant it..........next set of lights they are shocked.

Gotta love eshay lads of Sydney, i'm from Frenchs Forest haha i know what you mean. I forgot i raced a GTI a few weeks ago the guy was in his 30s and i beat him, not sure how much power they have lol

Apparently some taxi drivers will race late at night if they're bored lol since they don't own the car some of them thrash it.

Haha Nike caps. Here in Syd we get lads with G-Star, Gucci hats and the bum bags. Oh lawl the bum bags i really hope that does not go mainstream.

Edit: typo

I've had a car full of bogans pull up next to me and yell out "Chinese cars are shit.......your cheating!!" (i don't know what they ment about cheating)

I laugh yell back "it's Japanese"

The lights turn green, i turn left and they think i'm racing and take off straight.

made me lolz - VQ25DD......

Seriously though - if you want left alone / sleeper, M35 Stagea.

    • First up, I wouldn't use PID straight up for boost control. There's also other control techniques that can be implemented. And as I said, and you keep missing the point. It's not the ONE thing, it's the wrapping it up together with everything else in the one system that starts to unravel the problem. It's why there are people who can work in a certain field as a generalist, IE a IT person, and then there are specialists. IE, an SQL database specialist. Sure the IT person can build and run a database, and it'll work, however theyll likely never be as good as a specialist.   So, as said, it's not as simple as you're thinking. And yes, there's a limit to the number of everything's in MCUs, and they run out far to freaking fast when you're designing a complex system, which means you have to make compromises. Add to that, you'll have a limited team working on it, so fixing / tweaking some features means some features are a higher priority than others. Add to that, someone might fix a problem around a certain unrelated feature, and that change due to other complexities in the system design, can now cause a new, unforseen bug in something else.   The whole thing is, as said, sometimes split systems can work as good, and if not better. Plus when there's no need to spend $4k on an all in one solution, to meet the needs of a $200 system, maybe don't just spout off things others have said / you've read. There's a lot of misinformation on the internet, including in translated service manuals, and data sheets. Going and doing, so that you know, is better than stating something you read. Stating something that has been read, is about as useful as an engineering graduate, as all they know is what they've read. And trust me, nearly every engineering graduate is useless in the real world. And add to that, if you don't know this stuff, and just have an opinion, maybe accept what people with experience are telling you as information, and don't keep reciting the exact same thing over and over in response.
    • How complicated is PID boost control? To me it really doesn't seem that difficult. I'm not disputing the core assertion (specialization can be better than general purpose solutions), I'm just saying we're 30+ years removed from the days when transistor budgets were in the thousands and we had to hem and haw about whether there's enough ECC DRAM or enough clock cycles or the interrupt handler can respond fast enough to handle another task. I really struggle to see how a Greddy Profec or an HKS EVC7 or whatever else is somehow a far superior solution to what you get in a Haltech Nexus/Elite ECU. I don't see OEMs spending time on dedicated boost control modules in any car I've ever touched. Is there value to separating out a motor controller or engine controller vs an infotainment module? Of course, those are two completely different tasks with highly divergent requirements. The reason why I cite data sheets, service manuals, etc is because as you have clearly suggested I don't know what I'm doing, can't learn how to do anything correctly, and have never actually done anything myself. So when I do offer advice to people I like to use sources that are not just based off of taking my word for it and can be independently verified by others so it's not just my misinterpretation of a primary source.
    • That's awesome, well done! Love all these older Datsun / Nissans so rare now
    • As I said, there's trade offs to jamming EVERYTHING in. Timing, resources etc, being the huge ones. Calling out the factory ECU has nothing to do with it, as it doesn't do any form of fancy boost control. It's all open loop boost control. You mention the Haltech Nexus, that's effectively two separate devices jammed into one box. What you quote about it, is proof for that. So now you've lost flexibility as a product too...   A product designed to do one thing really well, will always beat other products doing multiple things. Also, I wouldn't knock COTS stuff, you'd be surprised how many things are using it, that you're probably totally in love with As for the SpaceX comment that we're working directly with them, it's about the type of stuff we're doing. We're doing design work, and breaking world firsts. If you can't understand that I have real world hands on experience, including in very modern tech, and actually understand this stuff, then to avoid useless debates where you just won't accept fact and experience, from here on, it seems you'd be be happy I (and possibly anyone with knowledge really) not reply to your questions, or input, no matter how much help you could be given to help you, or let you learn. It seems you're happy reading your data sheets, factory service manuals, and only want people to reinforce your thoughts and points of view.
    • I don't really understand because clearly it's possible. The factory ECU is running on like a 4 MHz 16-bit processor. Modern GDI ECUs have like 200 MHz superscalar cores with floating point units too. The Haltech Nexus has two 240 MHz CPU cores. The Elite 2500 is a single 80 MHz core. Surely 20x the compute means adding some PID boost control logic isn't that complicated. I'm not saying clock speed is everything, but the requirements to add boost control to a port injection 6 cylinder ECU are really not that difficult. More I/O, more interrupt handlers, more working memory, etc isn't that crazy to figure out. SpaceX if anything shows just how far you can get arguably doing things the "wrong" way, ie x86 COTS running C++ on Linux. That is about as far away from the "correct" architecture as it gets for a real time system, but it works anyways.
