I don't think she's cursed,,,nor does she need an exorcism,,,what she's needed was tender loving care which she has not seen for a while. She been getting plenty of it in the last 2 weeks let me tell you two boofheads. We started at about 2.30 and finished at 9.30,,,got all her under-belly done which was cool and for once I left happy.

I've left a message with the windscreen guy but I'll bet he's like almost everybody else and is still on holidays till next Monday. I'll ring him again on the 10th if I don't get a reply sooner.

I'm just starting to sell all my gear off... Going to start from a fresh base in 6 - 12 months time and build probably to the same standard as Duncs Yellow and Purple beasty.

Well in between Pete's HR31, waiting for machining, parts etc etc and the rain ive been stuffing around with Neil's car too, all be it slower than id like but trying to get the HR31 out of here sooner rather than latter, so I can finish my own GTiR.

Its no where near finished as yet, far from it actually but this is where its at.

Oh and a massive mention to my Fiance who has put up with me working on Pete's car for two weeks now and Neil's on and off this week, all while im meant to be on holidays doing nothing.....

Yea you and me both Michael,,, Gotta love the FIA's touring car standard intrusion bars instead of CAMS 3 bar ugly stuff. There wouldn't be to many cars running this quality,,,check this FPR pic,,,it's Paul Dumbrell's V8 supercar,,,very ugly.

Super taxi cages amuse me. We all have to adhere to a half door opening height for side intrusions even if the cage is homologated outside shedule J.

Yet have a go at how high they run their intrusions. I know why they do it and it makes perfect structural sence, but were not able to do it.

Same as the drop bar in the door opening. We have a few strict rules for door openings.

There are for and againsts when using the X intrsuions. They are actually way easier to fabricate than the bent bars beleive it or not.

what is the strength diference between the x bar that has 1 bar cut and welded around the other (like that v8 one), and the two bent bars with the gussett (like niels car, and WRC cages)

My logic would say a WRC would built to withstand bigger impacts, as side impacts are usually with a small diamiter tree (compated to being t boned by a car)

And yes, alas I am considering a cheater car... Bang for buck, it's winning atm. But that decision is still a way off, the first thing to do is sell mine. It has to go unfortunately. It'll cost me twice as much to get it to Targa spec then starting from scratch.

Its pretty similar to alot of other cages ive done like Ryan's

This one has the full roof X, different head support bars, intrusions and the windscreen supports.

The U type intrusions have a few advantages, the X bars obviously have a raised stress area where they are welded. The welded sections meet at fairly acute angles usually 50+ degrees, that leaves plenty of welded surface area, the welded area is just as strong as the original tube but the heat zones around the area can become a problem.

If they fail the X bars usually split open and create all sorts of nasty sharp edges etc not to mention the lack of protection.

The U bar obviously has no welded areas. It is also double tube diameter the entire length of the intrusion as opposed to the X bar which has a section usually an inch or so long that is only single bar protection.

For the U bars to fail they either need to spilt open (they are made from 750Mpa CDS as opposed to 350mpa), tear the welds off the main hoop and front legs (they are also tagged to the sill pannels and pillars where possible so not just relying on the hoop and leg welds in Neil's case) or finally they need to bend the legs and hoop, also needs to bend the hoop X, dash bar and roof supports to do so though...

So the U bars are stronger when done properly in double tube and they remove the chance of the X bars intersection failing.

The disavantage of the U bars is the additional work it requires. A normal X intrusion is pretty simple, straight tube two knotches, typically the cut tube is a 55-60 degree knotch welded together where it intersects and move on. sometimes fit two vertical gusset tubes if required.

The U bars need to be thought out alot more to make sure the bends line up and butt up against the other tube,it looks awful if the bends are different radius' or angles too so some though has to go into that too. I flatten the bend where they meet and MIG weld the two bars around the circumference, then make up two vertical supports from offcuts, finally cut the gusset plates and weld them in and with neil's car linish it all smooth so the whole gusset looks seamless to the intrusion.

Its easy to spend 3 hours on an intrusion bar. Worth the time though if the owner is willing to pay for it.

I rarely do U bars due to the extra time and cost involved. Not many people really bother either.

yeah guys windscreen man is the same as I was talking about. we go back about 10 years so was just helping him fill some orders. just been off on leave and computer free though so kind of fell off the map. back at work now though so neil if you've had no luck let me know and I will pick it up again. :)
