I have R33 RB25DET and am having problems with the tacho. everything else works fine and i have tried cleaning out the pugs and checking the contacts. where to go from here? used to work intermittently but has total shit the tin now. i didnt have the problem when it went to red line it just dropped in and out when it wanted too. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

I would almost put money on it being dry solder joints in the tacho. Same thing happened to the speedo on my old 33. If youre brave, you can pull the tacho out of the cluster and resolder all the joints and it should come back to life.

cheers guys fro all the help. i have mangaed to get it workin again but only every now and then. if i smash the upper rhs of the gauge cluster it comes to life. checked the signal input and 100% ok so probably gunna try and re-solder contacts! hey whats the worst that can happen ill just get another one if i f#@k it up!

I have the same problem with the tach even after removing it, and blowing it out with canned air, though I neglected to spray the necessary contact points with the appropriate stuff so I will revisit it again one day.

Anyway, I have a simple solution and you don't need to do much. Gently pull on the trip odometer reset stalk (don't yank or pull too hard, ouch) until it works again. It probably won't be cured until the tach is thoroughly cleaned though, as the stalk pulling is a temporary fix.

I replaced my cluster, tacho was reading all over the place like jumping up and down to 5000rpm at idle.

If banging it temporarily fixes then it's as simple as a dry solder joint like other people have mentioned, you can either do it yourself or take it to auto electrician to refurbish.
