Heya all.

Recently noticed some rust on the floorpan of one of my cars and just looking for a good place to take it to that won't charge me my unborn and a kidney..

Any suggestions sydney skyliners?

If you can post up roughly the amount of work done and cost that would be really beneficial.

Cheers!

sorry can't recommend anyone ... I've had some strut tower rust taken out by a mob in seven hills but they did such a bang up job I need to go back in less than a year as it appears worse now.

I've also got a lot of surface rust on the floor pan (from below the car/outside) and intend to get an airblast thingo attach it to my dad's compressor and sand blast the crap out of it, then fishoil the whole underside (literally drench it in fishoil).

If anyone can chime in with a really good rust repairer that'd be great .. I've already gotten 2nd hand strut towers so that mine can get repaired but don't trust the mob who did the original job, one bit.....

Buy some axle stands and an angle grinder with a big wire wheel, and be prepared to get dirty.

Will be the cheapest way, if they havent rusted right through then treat the whole underside with a rust preventor/inhibitor then spray the thing with underbody sealer.

Just make sure you get every little nook and cranny cleaned out.

Might take you a few weekends but will save you giving up your 1st born.

speaking of stands ... what's the safest method if I'm going to be under the car whole weekend screwing around with sandblaster ? Bear in mind I don't even have a jack now.. Would ramps be better/safer/cheaper than axle stands? Where can I get a decent jack (can I rent one?)

Yeah you can rent one from Kennards/coates etc. or Autobarn/super cheap/repco sell ok jacks reasonably cheap, but get a 2-ton one, atm i have a cheap 1400kg one and it sucks!

ramps are better than stands imo, but depends on whether you need to get wheels off etc.

My trick is if you have some old steel wheels lying around, jack the car up and stick the old shit rims under your wheels/tyres and the front and rear.

It seems to be rusted through at this one spot only (i presume from a water leak at one point) so will definitely need to goto a shop. I do know a shop that can do it however their work has dropped a bit in quality over the last several years unfortunately which is a shame as it used to be top notch.. however i might use them anyways seeing as i won't even be able to see the repair at all considering it's to the floorpan and there shouldn't be any paint etc involved..i'd just get it galved afterwards.

Ramps would be good wackydee. If it was me, i'd use a trolleyjack to raise it then also put jackstands underneath for if the trolleyjack fails. Like said, you can get ok jackstands from autobarn etc. There were some recent recall on repco ratchet stands so keep that in mind (failed and crushed someone to death from what i read on here).

Anyone else that's had this done?

for all things panels i would definitely stop in to talk to Louie at Xclusive Colours on the Cumberland HWY in Smithfield, he is the most recommended panel beater on this forum and is very fussy about his work.

here is another sau thread recommending him

I used to work at a custom car and restoration specialist in Fairy Meadow called Classic Fabrications. Awesome quality of work and as they only do resto's and custom work they are very used to rust repairs. Dont charge excessive amounts either.

Can give u details. If its only a small patch of rust, rip the carpets out and take it down - reckon it'd be only a day or two to fix.

I use & definatley recommend Exclusive Customs http://exclusivecustoms.com.au.

If you want the job done properly & they are located at Kingsgrove. Give them a call & ask for Jason 9502-1496 & tell him Batman told you to call.

small patch of rust = day or 2 ??? What's that 10 hours labour at $80+ ?

I didnt mean a day or two of time to repair - I meant a day or two to complete if you want the underseal to be nice and dry (once repainted) before he drives off. I think most workshops would have a car for at least a day when doing a rust repair - drop off in the morning & pick up late afternoon/next day - dont you?

    • Have you put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on and verified your oil pressure?   Noise being on the block, on exhaust side, how high up the block does it seem to be? It could be the VCT system getting cranky, especially if it's mainly at idle, and when warm, as that'll be your lowest point for oil pressure. Could be showing that oil passages / VCT solenoid are blocking.
    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
