Do Commodore Double-DIN units fit an R33?

G'day.

Please don't hate me, but because of financial constraints I'm thinking of putting a CD/cassette/radio out of a VX Commodore into my R33.

I've been using an original R33 double DIN unit, but it has shat itself & I can't afford a decent deck.

So, can anyone tell me if these units out of Holdens will fit easily into my R33?

I hope someone with experience in these matters can advise me.

All i can say is stay clear totally of factory decks.. sell it to another commodoor owner, and $300 will get you quite a reasonable CD player/mp3 player these days. Any factory deck i've heard in a car sounds "flat" to me, even in cars such as expensive Range Rovers and things I've been in. Its just not worth the fitting effort..

But should fit, unless they use some weird factory size.

just buy a cheap sony headunit mate - 100-150 bucks will pick you up one

Thanks for your responses, but I have a couple of constraints.

Firstly, I want something with both CD and cassette (I've still got all my old stuff on tape).

Secondly, I can get a Eurovox or Blaupunkt unit out of a Commodore very cheaply.

Thirdly, it's only going through the standard Skyline speakers, so the sound isn't going to be brilliant anyway.

Finally, I'm almost broke, so I reckon if one of these fits then it's a good short-term solution.

I hope someone can help with installation advice.

save your money and time, get a new head unit. why are u still using tape? cdr is the key my friend, you can pick up a fairly good and basic pioneer cd and mp3 cd player for like $300 thesedays

Hi i was thinking of doing this my self as my second car is a 2 year old Commodore

i was thinking of mesuring up the gap to have a look if it will fit this weekend, i have the same problem as you my son is 4 years old and all his stuff is on tape,

will you let me know how you go with this if you go ahead with it.

I will certainly report on my progress if I do it, but first I really would like someone to tell me if it's possible before I waste an afternoon (and the skin off my knuckles, no doubt) trying!

To you, Paul r33 & others who say "why are you still using cassettes?", it's because I have about 100 of them filled with music that's not available on CD.

If you can show me how to transfer all this stuff to CD (CHEAPLY) then I will gladly convert to CD/MP3 or whatever the latest format happens to be this week.

In the meantime, CD & cassette it is - that's why I have a double-DIN deck in the first place.

well all headunits and car spaces (where the head unit goes) are ISO din slots, meaning their all standard and the same size. so yes your double din unit from another car will fit.

if youre gonna copy to mp3, go for 192kbit or higher

Paul, thanks for your MP3 advice & thanks for taking such an interest in my music collection, but please accept the following facts.....

1: I don't have $300 to throw around

2: I do have access to a very cheap ex-Commodore unit

3: Top-class sound quality is not one of my highest priorities at the moment

4: I have sh@tloads of cassettes which I like to play

5: I don't have time to go searching for the same music I already have on another format, or to transfer it all.

But yes, I will consult the R33 stereo installation guide & try my best!
