Hey,

Just wondering with all the skyline drivers out there with the exemptions, (not many left as you could only get an exemption if you owned before the rules) do you guys get bugged by the cops. I mean like do you constantly get pulled over and asked about the exemption and you have to sit there for 45 mins will they do their 'breath tests' or do they just check that you have an exemption and let you on your way.

My mate has just got an exemption for work purposes on a UTE and i was wondering if being a P plater driving a prohibited vehicle with an exemption causes a lot of heartache with the cops always checking to see if you have an exemption.

Thanks :)

I'd figure you'd get pulled over a lot; they'd be expecting you to be a P-plater who just decided to drive a restricted car. Even with an exemption, I guess it depends on your attitude at the time and if there's anything else they want to look at, but if you were in, for example, a stock XR8 Falcon with good tyres and you had an exemption letter with you at all times and were polite about it, you should be fine.

But yeah, you'll definitely get pulled over a lot.

Driven over 2 years [daily driven, not just locally as well] with an exemption for my car and have only been pulled over once.

*Touch wood*

I'm either lucky, or its in the system (I believe).

In saying that, I take my exemption as a privilege, so I behave myself as I don't want to lose the privilege of driving my car.

So, no speeding fines, did get defected that once, but that was my fault.

All in all, not a single problem, but I am in QLD.

I bought my Riceline before I got my full licence and was never pulled over for anything.

Things you should know:

1. My car was standard. Standard ride height, standard intercooler, standard exhaust, standard lights... STANDARD STANDARD STANDARD! So the car itself didn't draw excessive amounts of attention

2. I was constantly paranoid that I would be pulled over, so my driving reflected such. Road rules were srs bsns! So much driving didn't draw excessive amounts of attention.

3. I am the first Australian owner of my R33, so there wasn't any bad notes on the rego to make me any more suspicious.

4. There is only one traffic violation to my name, so I'm not flagged as someone that needs to get their arse kicked.

5. Where I drive I am lucky to see one police car in a week.

So! If your car is loud and gawdy, you drive like a complete dick, you or your car has history of being driven like a dick and/or you live in an area with high police presence... I'd keep a jar of lube in your cup holder :)

Thats what i thought, the exemption was in the system. So when they pulled you over did they ask for the exemption, read it, then let you on your merry way or did they hassle you, take your license back to the car and do the full "We are conducting a random breath test, please pop ur bonnet etc"

I was pulled over cause they spotted my seats, got a major defect for that :S, they were a little hard on me unfortunately.

I didn't bother testing them, I just handed my exemption over and then they did the sweep of my car, bonnet went up to look for mod plates for the seats, then checked ride height, BOV, etc.

Then I was on my way, you live and you learn.

It WILL be in the system IF you have an exemption AND you're the registered owner.

The system can't magically tell them every single person who is driving the car at the time, it's not psychic.

I think you've gotta expect to be hassled if you have an exemption, first thing they are going to see is a p plate and banned car and want to have a look. A lot have conditions attached so they'll want to see if you really are working or travelling to X spot, etc..

ok , this is hows it works, your "exempt" to drive a prohibited vehicle during work duties. u cannot go to the shops 4 sum tea if its not work "related"

my mates been through it all.

after hours driving home was not part of the exemption.

mind u if he was driving "home" to deliver parts he would have been fine..

go figure

Just to clear things, there are other methods of acquiring an exemption.

Mine is not for work, so I can drive my car 7 days a week, but just not after 11pm, hasn't really affected me.

I had one, never got picked on though.

There is a reason for applying/getting an exemption, so like it's been mentioned, work related etc. If you aren't doing "work related" stuff you are gone.

I could drive 24x7 with mine in any car. It has on the bottom you must keep the exemption on you at ALL times.

I got pulled up a couple of times, and pulled into RBT stations. Never got asked for my exemption so i never showed it. I got picked on more in my n/a car then I did in my twin turbo 32 gtr lol

I have never been pulled over in my debadged R34 GT... Not the same as having an exception I know, but you can't tell it isn't a GTT unless you know what you are looking for, which most people don't.

Most police won't look to pull you over other than for RBT or if you are doing something wrong. If you think about how often you actually get pulled over, it really isn't worth thinking about it.

Think about how often you see a cop on the road... One day in three, one trip in four? Out of every 10 of those cops, only 1 would be in a position to have the oportunity to pull you over. Police won't chuck a dangerous U-turn or anything like that to come after you (unless you are doing something wrong).

So doing the maths, you could at most get pulled over on 2% of your drives (presuming you see a police car one trip in every 5). Then out of that 2% of your drives, the cop that you see has to actually decide to pull you over and justify it, which means pulling off a main road, recording their actions, reporting to base (on occasion) and so on... Most cops won't do that unless you are doing something you shouldn't. So if you are unlucky enough that 1/10 of those cops that can pull you over do, that leaves you with a 0.2% chance of getting pulled over to be checked.

2 drives out of a 1000... I don't think that is much heartache.

Fark me, can we possibly have any more topics about the same crap, over and over again.

Its simple, if you are eligable for an exemption you will get one. If not you won't.

If you drive without one and get caught you may be fined

If a cop wants to pull you over he/she will, by law they have that option.

If you own an import they will pay more attention to you.

Oh and if you have an exemption and you are hassled, who gives a fark, you have an exemption, abide by the rules of the expemtion and you are fine.

if you're worried because you have "illegal" mods on the car, then get rid of the mods, or make sure its legal.

It really is that farken simple!!!

LOL... Full of Fail...

The police, especially HWP, are constantly running rego checks on vehicles around them.

If they see P Plates on a car that is turbo, they will pull it up.

If it comes up with that the registered owner is unlicenced, they will pull it up, etc etc

So on and so forth.

As for not pulling u-turns to go after people for no reason, they see what they call something "suspicious", IE P-Plater in an import, and they do, and will turn around and come after you.

    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
    • Awesome writeup and details. Thanks for sharing the story so far. I can relate to parts of it with my previous car and some of the issues I had to deal with.
    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!
