Okay,

A friend of mine bought a 89' 300ZX TT, Auto about 4 months ago, he's driven it about 1 month before it stopped on the side of the road (apparently a timing belt) It's done just over 100,000kms since new.

He took it back to where he bought it, and they claimed he "cooked" the engine? WTF ? Now they are saying he needs a new one and they're gonna charge him $7000 for a new VG30DETT?

My Question is:

_Assuming_ it overheated etc, which is still not proven... could the dealer be pulling our chain?

Would it be better to "rebuild" the engine ? After it was "cooked" ?

Would it be better to find a new engine from another 300zx ?

and WHO would you all here recommend to do the work?

TIA Guys

-Kym

:D

I would recommend that your friend gets rid of his ugly assed 300zx & gets something better......

But seriously, if the timing belt went & he was still driving it would have done some pretty serious damage to the engine......

When buying a car with that many km's on it the timing belt is the first thing you should check......

I'm not sure about where you are, but in NSW all 2nd hand cars bought from dealers are under a mandatory 3 month dealer warranty. Too bad that it was 4 months before it happened.....

Nah man, it was like a month after he bought it.... it's been in the shop being "repaired" for a good 3 months now....

it was still under warranty when it happened..

Then you should demand the he fix it for free or you'll contact the department of fair trading......

exactly

and they should be proving its a cooked engine if thats what they think it is.

pm me with where he got it and what condition the car is in. got any pics of in engine ?

The car dealer is Independant Motors in Vic Park.

Last time I heard the engine head was in the boot, and in pieces.

The dealer claims the engine is cooked and not covered under warranty.

I don't care saying the dealer name, as I am not slandering them so there's no defamation going on. Just saying events as they happen.

Independant Motors has some fine cars... :)

A rebuilt engine is probably what you want, cause then you know its good. Getting a second hand engine could lead to more problems, you dont know the k's or whether its been thrashed or abused.

Anyway, what a perfect excuse for a bit of internal bulletproofing.

A VG is a bitch to work on, but if you can get it out, all you need is a rebuild kit, with gaskets, seals etc. The insides are no more complicated than your average car, there is a misconception that its hard to pull an engine down and rebuild it, it took me 2 weeks to rebuild a RB30E in my vl, first car, memories.

how can some of you people bag the 300zx's? have you been in one b4? 2 of my mates have mildly modded auto 300's one which has run a 12.592@182kph with boost, filter, exhaust & a looser convertor! boostmeister has seen it run @ duel's dyno day and made 318hp@tyres with these mods! all for under $2000! i have NEVER seen even the mighty GTR do this!

dude i'm not lying i have it on video and lots of people were there to see it! check out www.drivelinechatter.com and go to the drag ladder, most of the people on that ladder were there and saw it run that! and as i said boostmeister was at the cramer dyno day and saw it bust his skyline while being extremely quiet (trust exhaust) compared to alot of the other less powerful cars!

TTZ32 is the z actually there is a picture on the driveline site if you check it out profiles i think its in!

another mate of mine has full exhaust, twin pods, boost and made 280rwhp and 13.9 in perth...

why is it then that these 3 cars come no-where near this other car yet have been modded the same if not further....?

and for reference someone else i know ran a 14.22 in a dead stock zed

ive checked the site but am still not convinced, it doesnt line up....

i found the full stats on geoffs car....

89mm overbore, 3.1 litre

Trust TD05 16G turbos and external wastegates with dump pipes

GReddy intercoolers

Aftermarket exhaust manifolds

Earls engine oil cooler

Transmission oil cooler

Full twin 3" exhaust

Tomei adjustable cam gears

Upgraded fuel pump, don't know the brand but it sure is loud

Larger injectors, not sure on size but at least 550 cc

HKS Electronic Valve Controller (EVC)

APEXi Air Flow Convertor (AFC)

HKS Vane Pressure Convertor (VPC)

Miscellaneous gauges - boost, exhaust temp, water temp

Ohlins suspension

Upgraded transmission with line locker

Aftermarket camshafts

Tomei steel head gaskets

Jun valve springs

Titanium valve spring retainers

Headwork is evident, with blending of the seats carried out plus minor smoothing and blending of the ports

428rwhp

i repeat this did a 12.8....

now do you realise why im skeptical as to how a std turbo, engine, intercooler zed ran faster than this beast?

dude his car should run 10's easy if it's got all that! is it manual or auto? although everyone might think manuals are faster the auto's generally are! example my gf's auto s14 made 126kw@tyres with me driving 17/08/02 @ willowbank ran 13.759@101mph yet the s15 6 speed there ran 14.6 or something! again check it out on the drag ladder! plus again it ran that at willowbank with probably over 100 witnesses! TTZ also has a calitech performance meter and it shows that it runs 12.9 on the street and it's actually accurate unlike the guesstimate g-tech's!
