smb.conf looks good... nmblookup works fine... but I can't ping a WINS name... ???

does this box do the dns, and dhcp, if not you might need to change what is dished out by the dhcp to point to the right ip and maybe put in a forward lookup zone in the dns to the wins box?

No it doesn't do the DNS / DHCP...
