I wrote the database that we originally used to store membership details, and it used an autonumber field to assign membership numbers. Unless it's been replaced by something else (I don't think it has yet, I'm writing its replacement too ) the numbers are assigned by what order your details are typed into the db.

I'm assuming that we will forever keep those numbers as long as we keep paying our memberships?

That will be nice when I'm a krusty 60yr old driving my super old skool classic r33, and all the newbies are driving V39's or R41's and the membership count is up in the thousands!
