Can't you get into safe mode by pressing F5 or something instead of F8 as it boots? That's what it used to be anyway, no doubt MS have changed that too

Yeah try it with all the F keys Ben.

It is still standard for the F8 for Windows, but in this case it is HP changing their OEM version of Windows for support reasons and not MS's fault (for once)

IBM had theirs changed to F12 on there OEM versions iirc

and I think Gateway's (when they were around) was F1
