Black Canister Type Thing

Im just wondering what the black canister thing is in the front passenger side of your engine bay and what it does, its something to do with fuel is all i know.

Charcoal canister, stores fuel vapours from the tank and then purges into inlet manifold.

Do they have to be replaced/cleaned? every now and then.
