So I'm planning on buying Dimi's Stag from Sydney. Reg'ed till Jan 2011. Do I:

Go to RTA the next day to transfer ownership and pay tax, take car back to Melbourne, wait till reg is almost expired, then re-reg as a VIC car

OR - go to RTA and transfer ownerhship/tax, then take car back to melb and re-reg immediately.

What ever happens, I don't want to have to pay stamp duty in both states!

OK spoke with Vicroads - all I need to do is bring the car down to Vicroads with a RWC and that's pretty much it. No need to transfer ownership in NSW...

Does anyone know whether the NSW rego is refundable in VIC? I've read that it's refundable in QLD...

yeah was gonna say you just take the car straight back home... no need to do anything in NSW

You'll get a certain amount of time to transfer it into your name

Rego is definately refundable - look up the procedures in your state. You should just hand over the plates to VicRoads and they'll give you a receipt. Then fill out the NSW RTA form for a refund of rego.

EDIT: here you go http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/publicationsstat...ds/45071541.pdf
