Rims.. To Paint Or To Powdercoat.. Pro Or Diy?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

Recently acquired a set of Work Emotion XD9's for my black R34 4 dr.. They are silver and one of them has had gutter-rash repaired by Alliance but it has not yet been painted.

Tossing up my options and I'm pretty decided that Satin Black might be the way to go, looking to have a crack at painting them myself using the guides both on here and in other forums.

I may be getting a 'sponsor' of sorts who's color scheme is pink and black so was 'considering' either satin black rims with pink calipers and lugs OR pink rims with black lugs and calipers.

*puts flame suit on*

Any opinions (preferably constructive but I've already copped it heaps when telling my mates I may put pink rims on my black 4dr so I understand)

Also if anybody can share opinions on professional spray-painting/powdercoating experiences/places/prices would be appreciated preferably NOR.

PS: I love THE pink, and the color isn't that bad - no homo

Imo id go the black with pink calipers ...

you can diy with wet and dry sand paper and some paint from autobarn in just the cans if you dont have a compresser.

I did my old 32 stockies matte black and they turned out pretty good

but being some decent rims u might wana get the professionally done just to be safe.

Bottom line is do what you like. if you like the pink then go for it.

If they're Jap rims, I'd personally go professional powdercoater.

I sprayed my 34 GTT ones with a $20 can of paint from Supercheap Auto, but with my SSR's, Martin from Diamond Powder Coaters in Welshpool sandblasted, primed and topcoated a set of 17 x 8.5 rims for 55 per rim. Best price I could find, and the work was top quality.

Make sure you do it yourself , its a blast

id go black all the way , i have done several sets of rims silver to black , black to white, silver on silver , silver to green

sand it lightly first , dont wet and dry its useless , makes surface to smooth paint needs to stick

sand out gutter rash , my wheels were really bad from previous owner

clean rims well , get the dust off can use an alchohol base product

Get a good brand satin black paint and apply 3 really **** light ***** coats about 15cms away temperature is important when painting , read the cans instuctions well

Nice thing is if you F....... up and hit the kerb ,you know how to fix it !!!!

Heres some of my handywork

+1 for pink rims, nothing wrong with pink aha, it'll really make your 34 stand out that's for sure. personally I'd get them done by a pro but if your confident with your paint skills than i say go for it! worst case is they don't turn out how you'd like them so if that happens just get them done by the pro then

are they 18x10+18 or 17x9.5+17?

if yes go pink, if they are a weaker offset go satin black.

you need to be seriously ballin to get away with the pink :P

OMFG OMFG OMFG PINK PINK PINK RIMSSSSSS

dont be a sissy..

if you have chunky offsets and wide rim then as the guys above have said GO PINK PROFESSIONAL POWDERCOAT

i'm a weak cnt cos all i can do is paint my lexus badge pink. itsme - i freaking LOVE Your car dude. you know that spoldgy stain that is on your front fender that won't come out??

BECAUSE I PUT IT THERE BECAUSE I LOVE YOUR CAR PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH

Thanks for all the replies fellas.. Rowan you had me and my mate crying with laughter.. f**king legend..

So due to loving (trying) DIY jobs.. I've done one rim Satin Black and it looks good, tires have just come over from tempe so I'll probably do all 4 black chuck the tires on and see how they look and if I don't like the black then I'll be taking them to get them powdercoated pink and I'm not talking some gay fluro or light baby pink.. my 'sponsor' is JD4D (JesusDied4Dubstep) so the pink is like this http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc...5_1300004_n.jpg

Also have some new Workemotion glow-in the dark stickers, made sure I could get these before painfully scraping off the old ones that were still on the rims in perfect condition =(

Offsets btw are 18x9+30 all round with 225/40 for front and 235/40 back

So gonna finish the black off get em on the car and see how she looks, if she's boring in black then pink it shall be, any idea how hard it would be to ensure the color will be the same as the logo I have little to no knowledge on powdercoating other than the time I was 12 and couldn't afford a Haro BMX bike and settled for a k-mart special 'Malvern Star' and I was so embarrassed I tried to get it powdercoated chrome and couldnt afford it so I painted it chrome myself and the paint rubbed off to a dull silver.. it felt like I was growing up in the great depression.

But seriously Rowan.. f**king lolz dude gotta catch up again so I can 'appreciate' your car like you did mine.. and it wasn't a splodge you tore a whole in my bumper..

ahh yes - i see you too have noticed my rancid ejaculate contains acidic properties..:)

...wait what??

anyway - i sold the cefiro bro!

drive soarer now..

and - make sure you get FUSCIA.

fck your sponsor they won't notice the actual hue of pink difference!.. ps - LOL @ JD4D!!!! is that for real? or is that a lol thing..

make your car look like:

GT_SET_BLACK_FUSCHIA.jpg

i mean uhhhh..

IH0J1992s%20copy.jpg

ps - SIF rattle can paint a set of work rims!!! that's SO GHETTO!!!

pps: glad i could make you lol out loud!

Nooo the Ceffy =(

JD4D is dead serious, one of my best mates and yes the name is for the lulz i guess..

Just out of curiosity called a few powdercoating places and both of them told me I can choose any color in the dulux powdercoating range.. I must say NONE of them appear close to what I'm after =/

And no Fuschia either Rowan.. only dull pinks and gay rasperry colors.. fml

Yeh I live in Mirrabooka so it seemed like the right way to do things.. looking back on it spraypainting Works rims is pretty damn ghetto

Don't forget the lock nuts

You Sir are hilarious damn good call..It's tough livin in the ghetto, in the ghetto.. At least if they are Pink they will be easier to see when somebody is running away with them at night..  >_<

no body will steal pink rims. go pink man. dont just do calipers and leave it at that. wear a pink tutu to a costume party, and you're funny; wear pink nail polish to same party, and you're a homo.

srsly though, if you wanna promote the brand, pink rims will give more contrast

So.. I've spent many days and nights searching and it turns out I pretty much can't get the pink I'm after in a powdercoat due to all/most powdercoaters using the Dulux range which is relatively limited.. The pinks are all light and sh*t and not really what I'm after.. see I don't mind this pink http://www.rallygrafix.com/images/gallery/...pink_05_big.jpg or this one http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fkf00E6cYbA/S3FQDWA8....jpg?imgmax=800

So... I'm gonna go ghetto and paint them pink, I'll take my time (weeks if I have to) and get them perfect as possible.. Just hoping somebody can advise whether it is best to use acrylic or enamel and the benefits/downsides of each. I (believe) enamel is harder but similar to powdercoating whereby it can chip whereas acrylic is a bit softer and easier to work with =/

Also any recommended paint shops or brands to find this color would be appreciated.. so far the only brand I've been able to find that has decent pinks is House of Kolor so I might check them out.

Don't worry Eps no half-steppin for me dude, it's all or nothing!! An Basti - I'm definitely more of a pink tutu kind of guy rather than a pink nail polish kinda guy.. no.. wait..

omg im so sig-ing that last bit.

umm

morley ways there is beyond customs.. they would be good with this kind of crap.

anddddd

maybe try alliance rim repair??

long and short of it is, you really want a paint that will stand up to high temperatures.. and be a "soft" paint so that it can put up with rapid temperature change..

if you find a painter that does that - (i'd be looking at either shop mentioned above) let ME know - because i want a shop that can paint my brake calipers tiffany green :P

actually - just used that "internet" program on my computer for five minutes. turns out the "internet" can be used to buy stuff!!!

here ya go dickhead.

http://www.caliperpaints.com/product/G2BCP...e-Shipping.html

980 degree rated paint, 2 part process.

get like.. 3 or 4 kits. cos you're painting RIMS not lil brakes...

with the current USD you're laughing!

if you wanna buy some, let me know. cos i'm gonna do my brakes. and this way saves shipping.

okay just found a shop on ebay that sells it - each kit is 38 bucks (approx in aud)

from the looks of things you MIGHT get away with three kits.. that's good!

but shipping to perth for one kit is $42.. that's bad.

but if you get three kits and i get one kit then total shipping is $105.. that's good!

but even if we split the shipping appropriately, that's still a lot to pay for shipping. that's bad.

but perhaps if we can build some more interest up in this product we can organise a small AND QUICK group buy? and work out a deal with the seller? that's good!

but i CBF organising a group buy.. that's bad..

...so if you're happy to buy multiple kits of the pink.. holla!

and i'll get a kit or two, and we'll divide the shipping appropriately
