Garrett Medium Frame Gtx Turbos

So you have you driven a car with a GTX3071 and Tial 1.06? :)

GT35's aren't my favourite turbo, I have heard of too many failing, even at low (less than 20psi) boost, perhaps because they are so common?

The Tials don't perform really any different to the normal housings, they are just easier to work with, lighter and prettier so the results specifically for a Tial housing turbo aren't too relevant. A good friend of mine upgraded from a 1.06 GT3082R to a .82a/r GT3582R after feeling the lag didn't justify the end result and ended up with the same or better power EVERYWHERE, which to me indicates going to 1.06 on a GT30 is a waste of time if a GT35 can spool comparably and seems to in effect allow more efficient pumping overall.

Obviously not perfectly relating to a GTX3071R, but I at least feel that if you need more than a .82a/r GT30 turbine flow then you're really stretching it with a GT30 to the point its really the wrong size for you and its eventually going to wear out its welcome.

If I were running a 3.5litre V6 there is no doubt I'd be looking at a twin scroll T4 based GT35 (or equivalent) based turbo. I don't know what the people you are talking about are doing to their GT3582Rs, the only guy I know who has broken one (incidentally the same dude who upgraded from the GT3082R) did so after running ~28psi at track days over an extended period of time.... and it damaged itself after trying to maintain that boost level with what he later discovered to be a split plenum.

You might want to check out the XR6 failure rates. They are not a great turbo imo especially with the .5 comp cover which is the only one I could fit in the space I have. There is no way I can fit a twin scroll flange let alone the twin gates no matter how small I made them.

The 3082 isnt great either from the research I have done.

I would have thought the .82 GT35 rear housing would be comparable to the 1.06 GT30 in flow but its a moot point as that is the housing I have already and I literally cant buy the .82. When its back in stock I will get one sent out, hopefully they are a direct swap.

I know about the XR6 failure rates, and god knows what the reason for that is - I had the idea it only started happening after some change for the BF series?

Fact of the matter is GT3582Rs have been around for a decade now, been used extensively all over the world under intense conditions and proved themselves to the point of being more or less the definitive gatekeeper of sanity for modified turbocharged cars... you know what you're going to get and you know its going to work.

OK, it can't fit so fair enough but bagging one of the most proven turbos out there realistically folly. Why can't it fit, are you stock mounting it?

You are right about the GT3082R though, not great - which is why I'm a little bewildered at Garrett virtually recreating an expensive equivalent of the concept with the GTX3076R.

I thought the XR6 failure rates were because of the inline filter (tiny mesh screen) that is used inside the turbo oil line, it gets clogged and starves the turbo of oil.

^ That would explain it, I was wondering if something like that might have been the case but refrained from saying anything given Ford should know better

I certainly wasn't bagging them out, it just doesn't seem to flow too well with the .5 front. Hopefully the Garrett engineers have sorted some of the current issues with the new range. I agree that checking the filter is an often overlooked maintenance task but it would be a lot easier to block the 1mm restrictor without it.

Here is the space constraint I am dealing with.

And put it where? Im not ditching the airbox just yet, most of the US single turbo gear has very poor manifold design unfortunately and I cant run twins due to the front shaft and steering.

The manifolds should flow well enough as HKS managed to steal them for their kit, I guess I will see soon.

using the new GTX turbo (3582 equivilant, .86rear) my car just pushed out 630rwhp on e85, 27psi. will post a dyno sheet today. all my mod's are in my build thread...

extreamly happy!! maxed out the baby turbo though, specially the .86 rear. however i have a huge playing field with boost since it still comes on VERY early.

as i said...will post up the dyno sheet ASAP

Anyone ever had there back 3 cylinders turning off for a coupl mins then fixing itself. Every 45 or so mins on idle? Or after a few "blips of the throttlle"

They feel they have tried everything n that's why I am unable to comment on the gtx3076 :( it's not back yet.

They are still trying to nut it out.

Sounds like a wiring issue... should start a new thread for it as there could be much discussion for that.

Nice result on the GTX3582R (??) Stryder - look forward to seeing the sheet :) Whats the spool like?

Nah. All wiring completely replaced. Injectors are all getting injector pulse. Ignition is fine etc etc. It's been there over a fortnight longer than it was due. They are now trying more random and random things. Just in the hopes. They will find it. Just trying to research on my end.

;)

SAU search time :)

I've witnessed this happening, tucked the powerfc back into the footwell after a tune and it started happening, after a while of checking a few things it turned out re-seating the connector to the powerfc sorted it out.. it was like revving it shook the connector and made it work for a while then it worked loose again.. worth a try considering its free!

A few places sell GTX3076R without turbine housings, at which point they are the same price as a "full" GT3076R... be careful that you dont end up with a full turbo.

A loose ECU connector will do that, I put an alarm system in mine and it kept dropping to 4-5 cylinders, undid and screwed the ECU connector back in and it came good (had to remove it for the alarm)

    • Nah, yeah, nah. Speakers have a nominal impedance of 8 ohm that looks more like 6.4 ohm when measured. The receiver's amplifiers (all channels) are all rated to 6 ohm (I think, it's been a long time since I cared). The real problem is that many modern class D amps have aggressive protection circuitry that cuts off the fun if they think too much current is being drawn. And with my speakers having series crossovers, as opposed to more typical parallel crossovers, and big TL enclosures, they can certainly dip down to lower impedances at some frequencies and that easily triggers the protection. Pioneer receivers are somewhat famous for it, but even Denon, Onkyo, et al, all have many complaints against them across various models. It only does it when listening to music at high levels. You have to be putting your ears at risk to do it. But sometimes I want to do that. If I was serious about using it as a listening room I'd simply upgrade the amp for the front pair to a nice Rotel or something, and just use the receiver for signal handling and processing - although that would be a bit of a pain in the arse too. Have to switch on more shit, pre-amp volume vs main amp volume, etc etc.
    • yeah pretty much, stopped playing after lightfall, couldnt be bothered with the final shape...  ran that game into the ground for years... bit of a shame.. the  story was awesome. was playing a lot of trials but the hackers became tooo much, ruined the game.

    • I reckon you are 100% right on the money. The only reason I bought Red Sport instead of the base VR30 is that I am investigating racing it in Production Cars, and they require you to run a (mostly) standard car....therefore knowing exactly what was in the RS spec was important to me and I paid the extra. Other than that, for sure I would have pocketed the $10k and spent them on mods instead. Plus the non-RS models are more likely to have had a nicer life prior. Just a warning though, mods always cost twice as much as they look like they will on paper BTW you should also consider the 400R imports, they are about the same price as a local RS but 5+ years newer. Of course that comes with the usual warnings about finding parts, unhelpful nissan dealers and finding insurance
