Garrett Medium Frame Gtx Turbos

Everyone, I am interested in seeing if this turbo really is a bit of a lag monster, or this fella has just set it up wrong. I am willing to put in $10 towards his dyno time with Trent.

If we do this properly, I'll gather the cash and send it directly to where he takes it (Trent from Mercury, or am I on another planet?) This way, its fairly legit. Plus, I ran a $5k group buy a few years back, and made a lot of friends, so you can trust me. Plus, its only about $100 or so.

Anyway, I am happy tpo help out. Its also going to save me thousands if I decide to take a risk and end up buying a turbo that is laggy, or not suitable for me.

Anyone keen in helping out this test?

If we go ahead, I want to know A LOT of info about your car mate so Fill in this form form

Engine:

Intake Manifold:

Exhaust Manifolf:

Cams:

Pre intercooler piping size:

Post intercooler piping size:

Full exhaust specs:

Dyno Chart with AFRs plotted:

Full Ignition Map:

Base timing:

Type of ECU:

Anything else I Can think of over the next couple of days

I know thats a lot, and maybe it will take you a while to get the ignition timing down, but hey, if you want a pretty much free diagnosis, work for it, haha.

Fill this out please.

I really want to see this turbo tested properly. I cannot recommend it to people (I'm a tuner, and I get a lot of people asking me what they should buy) if its not what garrett claims.

Thanks, and I hope people are interested.

I have answers to all those except the ones that are obtained from the dyno run. Af ratio. Timings etc.

Trent could sort those out for you. Fill in the rest now to give us a better idea of possible restrictions. Whats the intake like, do you have any pics?

Its a avo airbox. Like the custom ones u see in the corner. Steel. Pod inside leading to front of Turbo. Steel piping.

When you say x-force turbo back, surely you do not mean an x-force turbo back....

X-force do not make a GT30 specific dump pipe, nor would they make one thats GT30/skyline specific. If your dump pipe is an X-force item, then you have a factory shaped dump... And that means we know what rear housing you have also...

Please confirm your dump pipe and take photos of its exit from the turbo please.. Please confirm who supplied the turbo for you too.

Had xforce dump on standard Turbo. When I changed Turbo avo had to mod the dump pipe to suite the garret hotside. So it is an edited xforce item. Im definately running. 82 garret hot side.

straight away I say ditch the "12psi" actuator and purchase a proper heavy duty "1bar" adjustable Garrett turbo actuator. they cost around $120

should make a slight, but positive difference, to the spooling up of the turbo.

    • This is a simple swap when you reuse the RB20 loom and auxiliaries. I run a standalone, but if I remember right, using the RB25 ecu you only have 2 injectors to inverse.  There are many DIY's on this subject online, including this forum.
    • Surprisingly the D6000 is only $1999, I'm waiting for the BF/CM sales, and hoping to get one cheaper. D4000 is well priced, still outperforms the 13" SVS PB-3000 and is like 1/2 the price at $1699 RRP. I do watch a fair amount of movies, and listen to EDM, jazz, symphonies, etc. so the lower notes from a subwoofer are always appreciated. The front 8" stage, just doesn't provide you with lively feeling, even though they are pretty bassy for a pair of large bookshelves. Then again, these days it's just playing Wiggles, Blippi and Ms Rachel, another reason the 3m wide cabinet exists, to hide all the audio gear behind it. They used to sit on a nice pair of stands, but as you know, they make good baby traps too.
    • Granted, which is a solid reason why I don't have one. My floorstanders are only -2 dB at 22 Hz.  So they're still working down to <20 Hz. Which is no doubt part of the reason why my receiver shits the bed! That Tonewinner would be about double the cost though, so it's not apples and apples. There aren't many AU$1300 subs (that you can buy prebuilt, I'm ignoring what can be achieved by DIYing) that compete.
    • -6dB at 22Hz isn't that great, watch the data from the D6000 from REW
    • I'll just leave this here. https://www.adelaidespeakers.com/subwoofers.html TL loading, big power. They sound awesome. This is what I would buy if I was going to try to take the bass away from my floorstanders. Just go with the 12".
