R32 Gtr Gearbox/diff? Noise On Deceleration Above 80km/hr

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im new to the forums here, i recently swapped my Evo 6(dont judge me lol) for a r32 GTR.. amoung the list of stuffed needed to be repiared is this wierd sound i can hear when above 80km/hr now this noise is only on deceleration or when coasting with very light throttle..no other time, It sounds like a dry bearing/ metal guide grinding...Now i have checked gearbox and diff fluid and they are all good, Checked to make sure no guides are rubbing like exhaust and tailshaft and i cant see anything...

This noise is not everytime eather most of the time but not every.. now if i put the clutch in while coasting or decelerating the noise goes away? clutch was done 2months ago with a heavy duty unkown brand as ABS mechanical did it which was before i got the car, receipt jsut says Nissan clutch (lol)

I have no idea what it could be, ive been doing alot of reading and some one will say rear output bearing, then others say input bearing and could be crown and pinion bearing in the diff...where should i start??

Ok last night i fully replaced the oil on the gearbox, and i found a metal plate attached to the magnetic drain plug... Harts transmission in brendale has told me this part is NOT important as it is only designed to slow the oil down under hard breaking and fast accelerating, I was thinking hmm ok then why do they put it in there then??.. but anyway the noise is still there, I have been reading that the brake pads can cause a similar rattling noise to what i am hearing? any1 heard of this? I am yet to go on the high way yet to see if the rattle is still there under light braking while coasting, will post back once i have done so.

Dude I had something very similar in my R32 GTR with over 500rwkw. Thought it was gearbox. The noise would go away with the clutch in and on deceleration. You know what it was ? My front diffs' crown wheel and pinion gear were totally rooted. The gears were that sharp you could shave with them. Have a look at your front diff mate, put the car on the hoist and you'll pick it. I have one here if needed too.

not intending to commandeer the thread, but ive had a similar problem occur to me today on my way home from work, but its a squealing noise almost like a break pad rubbing on the rotor, and its on and off as if its a particular section being affected, its only during cruising speeds and deceleration, so not when accelerating and you can hear at low as 10km/h around the street. my car is a r32 gtst, and ive had diff clunking when its being engaged, ever since i put in some alloy rear cradle bushes. am i up for a new diff?

hope you get your car sorted out too Skizza

?hey guys thanks for the info, I have pulled the front diff out and had it checked, and turns out the isnt even 5000kms on it...they said they can still see the forming patterns on the teeth, and the bearings are brand new... I put the car back together and took it to Hart Transmissions in Brendale and they said it sounds like the clutch aswell as tailshaft chatter.. the clutch is a heavy duty exedy or extreame..i think? the clutch cover is a pink colour so i assume its those brands?.. and they tailshaft chatter well i wonder if the rear cradle bushes and rear diff bushes will help solve that? i found out the rear diff mounts are boned there is no rubber left on them and same with the rear cradle, and i also noticed the drivers side CV comming out of the diff is leaking diff fluid and it moves up and down :S which isnt good imo haha. So i think i might have to take the rear diff out and check it over too.. I'll post a update once i find out

Ohh BTW the noise sounds like a BURRRRRRRRR with a squeel to it but now its only from 110km/hr and up most of the time

    • I'll snap up some photos when I'm back home, in the office today meeting my "in the office" quota. Have 2x Teams calls scheduled in, office culture they reckon.   I've never owned a proper off the shelf sub, I've always made or modified broken ones with Jaycar plate amps and/or car subwoofer drivers. The current (and broken) subwoofer has a proper home driver in it, Dayton driver, thos one https://www.daytonaudio.com/product/118/rss265hf-4-10-reference-hf-subwoofer-4-ohm FS of 25Hz, which is low but not low enough. Yeah, I think they were brought out to the market to compete with SVS. I would love a SVS PB-3000 but they're not cheap, especially after their price hike. From reviews online, it does look like the Tonewinner D6000 would destroy and with good amount of money saved too.
    • yeah, that happens too.  I'm really enjoying 4WDing at the moment, seen a few beautiful spots and want to go explore more of this enormous country.  The 370Z got a clutch LSD in it and a track day, great fun.  Getting the back end sorted out really rejuvenated my enthusiasm for driving it hard, the viscous one is poo especially in such a short and wide chassis.  The VLSD unpredictability was more benign in a long and skinny Skyline.
    • With my pre/power I use a remote trigger cable(3.5mm jack each end). I turn tv on, it turns both on via ARC. Or, just the pre with the remote or its streaming software, turns on both. Not that difficult at all. Obviously,  you would also want to actually update/upgrade over other factors in your life(bills, family, other hobbies, etc)
    • Yeah, nightfall was very "meh". And I'm crap at pvp, so feels like everyone has cheats(it's just my lack of skill). Final shape has been pretty good. New raid and dungeon are pretty good. If you want to give it a go, probably wait until it's on sale. But, as usual, most of it feels very familiar.
    • This morning was Kingswood's Microscopic Wars. It is the album's 10 year anniversary this year and we went to see them play the whole album as a special show a couple of months back. Was pretty spectacular.
