This has always puzzled me....

I know the following have the 6 speed getrag gearbox:

R34 GTR

M3 EVO

E39 M5

Supra, Non VVTI/VVTI

Mitsubishi GTO

Are there others that use it?

Anyway, are the boxes all the same? Ie interchangeable... Someone know? Cheers.

no?

No they are not interchangeable, and in most cases are completely different gearbox designs between different cars. Getrag gearboxes usually have an integrated bellhousing, i.e. designed to fit a specific engine block and can't be removed. Because of this, even gearboxes of the same model, e.g. Getrag 260, will not be interchangeable. The Getrag 260 was used in VS (series 3) / VT / VX / VY V6 Commodores, Beamers and Jags...yet they are not intercompatible between the manufacturers (unless you wanna do some cutting and welding conversion work).

Your Supra uses a Getrag V160 or V161, for reference. I am not certain if this gearbox was placed in any other vehicle, but I doubt it.

Getrags also have the wonderful advantage of being European and therefore rather expensive to repair.

S15 uses an Aisin 6 speed, which has an integrated bellhousing despite being much the same gearbox used in the Lexus IS200, Mazda MX5, Mazda RX8 and Honda S2000

Aisin also produced the 6 speed used in the VZ Commodore V6.

Also, the S15 gearbox is not that weak - two bathurst 24 hour races, several endurance and we've never broken one. People just like to drift with triple plate clutches and 250rwkw through a drivetrain that was originally designed to handle 180fkw~ from factory in a lightweight sports coupe...

Yeah, not a fan personally...I've sold heaps of S14 gearboxes to S15 owners who are under the impression the S14 is much stronger. I don't know where the consensus came from...I disagree, but am happy to take their 6 speed off their hands.

In my opinion the Aisin is a much better box all round. The only advantage of the S14 box is that you can install a PPG gearset in it. In standard form though, it's still just a small sports sedan gearbox and nothing that I'd want to go drifting with anyway...let alone downgrading retrograding my S15 and losing an overdrive.

ya but for track purposes, 5 speed is much better supposedly...even same with the 34 gtrs....they convert to 5 speed for better gear ratios and power along each gears....

There's a cheaper way to make the r34's move a bit quicker than having to convert to 5sp.

I see...

I would have thought the same as you Birds.

The 6 speed in the S15 seems very good.

Has "a" Getrag 6 speed...your focus uses a transaxle which altogether is very different from the rest of these RWD platforms...the Calibra Turbo also used a Getrag 6 speed transaxle in AWD form.

And look how well THAT turned out...lol

Hahaha well, transfer case aside, the gearbox isn't too bad

More of a cruiser than a performance vehicle though. I'd never run insane amounts of power through one of those cars.

Depends 'which' 6 speed you're talking about.

I know there's a 420G used in the BMW E39 which is a gearbox for RWD. The 6spd 466 AWD transaxle series is in lots of Porsche's, Audis and the GTO, the 448 6speed AWD transaxle tends to get used in the upper end Porsches. For what its worth, they are capable of holding big horsepower around 450 or so stock and after that they do need some (relatively inexpensive) bracing modifications to the housing and transfer cases, if you do manage to break one they do cost a veritable fortune. Most people break them because they're terrible, the boxes themselves are actually quite good! :(

In my experience a lot of them aren't interchangeable if that makes it any easier for you. The very hard way is to contract Getrag and be prepared to go slightly crazy in the process...

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 馃
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
