WRC have been running turbos for years....they cost $50k+ each retail. Haven't seen many of them on road cars.

That can't be true. 50k for a little turbine? Jeez :|

Imagine what you feel like if you blow it up.

lol, yeah look like benneton had the blown rear diffuser back in ye olde times but I wonder if they had the ECU smarts that could make the engine produce 80% of it's peak exhaust gas even when at part throttle? that's the key as far as I know to making them really useful.

I should explain. those pics were robbed from when the car was for sale about a year ago. engine had a recent rebuild by a engineering firm of the name maclaren. not sure of it's affiliation, if any, with Bruce's mob of the same name. probably not related at all.

steve-o. these pics were taken in the last year or so but that would be how the cars were (are?) timed. don't forget this thing ran in 1988 but even still timing of cars with transmitters has not really advanced at all in that time. the tech is pretty robust and useful as it is.

lol baron i think the engine would have been the limiting factor for benetton, given what we know about their masterful engine mode mapping in the mid 90's ..... haha

And yeah, exhaust blowing techniques have been around for quite a while, its probably just now they have pulled it out of the old tech recycle bin.

Blown diffusers have been around for ages. But off throttle blown diffusers are a relatively new innovation.

According to the website it was once related, but not anymore.

Did anyone else notice there were no retirements from the Gp on the weekend. AFAIK that has never happened.

It has happened before, but it's pretty rare. It happened a few years ago, like 05 or 06... or maybe 07?

I went & looked it up. Sort of

The answer is supposedly two.

Two are Monza in 2005.

The Dutch GP in 1961.

The big news is:

Narain Karthikeyan is the first driver in F1 history to finish 24th.

FIA confirms 1.6 turbo engines for 2014

The FIA, motorsport’s governing body, has confirmed that Formula One racing will move to new engine regulations in 2014, with the current 2.4 litre V8s being replaced by more efficient 1.6 litre, turbocharged V6s.

The FIA had originally planned a switch to four-cylinder engines in 2013, but has approved the revised formula in light of concerns formalised last week by various interested parties.

“Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One,” read an FIA statement.

“The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season.”

The new energy recovery systems (ERS) will replace the current kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) and are expected to be more powerful. Combined with the legalisation of turbocharging, they will ensure overall power outputs remain similar to current levels, despite an anticipated drop in the permitted rev limit.

Formula One’s last turbo era ended in 1988, a season dominated by the 1.5 litre V6 Honda-powered McLaren’s of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The sport returned to naturally aspirated engines in 1989, with a new 3.5 litre formula

Was looking at old Jordan pics, their exhaust blew into the underside of the rear diffuser in the 90s

Yeah right you're looking at blowing the 'other Jordan' pics Mr Brisby, we're onto you ;)

Sooo, 26 years later, we're going back to 100ml larger V6's, with a reduced rev limit and better materials, what a technological break-through this will be ...
