so im pretty new to formula 1 but whats with all the pit stops i get confused whose in front of who they say some guy is 3rd but the bottom of the screen says he is further back but he has more stops than the other guy i dont remember it always being so?

yeah it gets a bit confusing when the stops are on. generally when a bloke stops early he drops down the pack but will gain back those positions again when the guys in front of him stop. so often the commentators will call him as being in a 'net 3rd position' or whatever even though on track he's really 6th or something. it's a bit more confusing lately as people trying anything from 1 stop strategy to the recent 4 stop strategies. so when you have guys who are close but one is stopping 3 times and one is stopping 4 times it gets a bit messed up in the middle of the race until all the stops are gone and you see where they end up.

who's managed to stop only once on these Pirelli's and finish a race?

Ok so how did Vetel escape penalty when Pommy git Hamilton got one...and finished a gnats pube behind him....

If you were Webber you'd have to be f****d o*f seeing every time you came into the pits except that last one Alonso covered him off. Do you think RB were telegraphing they're moves? Took the last pit when Horner said they had to do a dummy pit for force Alonso in....funny why didn't they do that the first time... :spank:

They DID do it the first time. RBR did the undercut for their lead car. Webber only has himself to blame for not being in that position.

Ferrari picked their target well after that and shadowed Webber's stops until RBR out-foxed them in the pits. It certainly isn't RBR's fault Mark didn't have a better race. Its them that got him past Alonso!

and... Vettel "escaped" because he didn't do his fastest sector through the yellow flag section to get in trouble in the first place... and Hamilton didn't get a penalty:

Sergio Perez in australia for one. thanks mr smarty pants..... who gives a rats arse anyway? even if I was wrong and we are talking 2-4 stops (or is it 2-5 stops now?) the point was different numbers of stops between different drivers can make the race tough for people to follow at points in the race.

hmmm- Perez you say. I say getting disqualified doesn't really count as 'finishing' :P

okay, i'll concede stopping once is all good if your bottom-feeder outfit was going to finish out of the points anywho. team could prolly stand to save some cash on slicks, really

They got the drs wrong SO it was a great race, the battle between hamilton and vettel in the closing laps had me at the edge of my seat!

fixed

if DRS had "worked" there would have been no battle. Just an easy pass.

Fair enough, that was kinda how I meant it.

The thing that annoys me is when a much faster driver gets caught up behind a slower driver, and all the leader of the pair has to do is easily cruise round to defend the position, when it has very little to do with driver skill and it's all down to dirty air in fast corners and track layout. It happened last year too, despite all the overtakes, there were tracks that really cut down passing opportunities. Cutting downforce, cutting traction or increasing power are the natural racing cures, but drs and fake rain are bernies answers and that's what counts. Though I do prefer the faker solutions to boring tracks where it is rather processional, but that's just me.

I reckon double drs zones will make the drs a little less artificial, it will allow position defending a bit more like real racing.

I think hrd said earlier that good racing doesn't need a pass, the last 12 laps of this race were great, as were the first few with alonso leading. One of my first times I got really excited in an f1 race was watching imola in 2005, where alonso defended against a raging schumacher for 12 laps to take the win!!

From about 5 minutes onwards (it doesn't want to embed)

Has anyone else noticed that RBR don't gear their cars to take advantage of DRS?

Couldn't impact the rest of the lap if 7th gear was a fraction taller, surely

Didn't brundle say none of the teams gear for drs, that's why they all bounce off the limiters on Saturday? Or has that changed?

I'd love to see it if you happen to stumble upon it, I'm sure some f the young pups here would like a read too. (edit; please tell me my figures were correct before publishing!? haha)

I'd definitely be keen to have a read, that straight line speed must be one of the faster combinations of any f1 cars, weren't the v10's 0-100km/h in 2.5s?

Even the commentators often have no idea where all the random pit sequences will turn out.

was webbers kers working in the race? every time they had the onboard graphics up alonso (or whoever was with webs) was using it but webber wasn't?

Those graphics freeze up almost every time though, when they're braking at the end of the straights one of the cars' speedos usually stops.

The graphic is cool, but they really need to work on synchonizing the overlay with the actual physical reality; the tach needle is well out of step with the actual engine revs

I mean surely it's just pedal to floor, bang through gears as requierd? no one can mess that up surely? maybe his car really is knobbled somehow or is it just his weight penalty compared to the lighter drivers?

oh, and nee-san. you are a deadset prick. have ruined 98/99 f1 for me. you are lucky I don't ban you for life! seriously dude.... what was the point of that? surely anyone who was curious could have just googled it...

Richard,

The only place I remember talking about 98/99 F1 was I think in this thread probably about 10 pages ago, and I did attach "SPOILERS" tags to the post, I guess you scrolled up over it or something.

I was posting it in response to what someone else had said.

Honestly didn't mean to ruin it for you mate.

Sorry,

Mitch.

I dunno what race you watched but sergio drove a great race and 1 stopped to get from 13th on the grid to finish in 7th place which is well inside the points last I checked (and even under the old system was still inside the points). he was dsq after the race for a completely un-related infraction which was their rear wing. he most certainly did 'finish' the race though.

anyway, what's the argument? I never said it was a great strategy. I was trying to explain why things look confusing to a new F1 fan and what I said was 100% correct. why argue?

well there you go. I retract my previous comment

there's certainly no doubt it's a lot trickier to keep up with where everyone stands with relative strategies from minute to minute

i wish they'd leave the teams alone seems over controlled now must use XX tyres and stuff and all the stops ruins it for a formula 1 noob like myself.

same with the adjustable wing so you can over take and i'm not even sure what kers does but meh.. just want to watch good drivers drive.

I'll drink to that. :)

you're in the right place then mate. I think that's what we all want. teams pushing the edge of design and development, and drivers pushing those designs to their limit on the track.

don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the strategy aspect of F1, but you're right for a new viewer it takes a bit to get your head around. it was also a fair bit more interesting when they were allowed to stop for fuel too as you could then manage your cars weight (and thus speed) at various points in the race. you basically got to choose when your car would be quick and when it would be slow and if you chose well you got rewarded. now you know everyone is slow at the beginning and quick and the end so that really their relative pace is the same. fast wearing tyres have turned it around a bit now as you are quicker on fresh rubber so you can manage things that way but it's not quite the same...
