What's The Best Insurance Company?

Recommended Posts

So I've been looking forward to going out to purchase my first skyline for about the past 2 weeks (after finishing a series of stressful exams at uni and then having to have surgery straight after). I was getting really hyped up about it until I called RACQ to clarify a few things with them. Initially when I called them the first time, they told me that insurance was going to cost me about $1,100/year. However when I called them yesterday they told me insurance would cost me $3000. Well obviously I wasn't too happy about that at all. So before I let my dream slip through my fingers for a few years until I finish uni, I thought that I would come and ask you guys since you have already helped me with so much.

So my question is, what would be the best insruance company to go with? I am currently 18 years old and have only recently got my license. And no, I am not the kind of person that is going to thrash the crap out of my car when I get it. I actually plan on joining the police force (ironic I know) so if I get so much as a speeding ticket, that could jeopardise my future career. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou for taking the time to read this and sorry about the rant.

Tom

There are several threads about this Tom, if you'd like to "Search"...

but I'll fill you in for the time being.

When you say "Best", I presume you're asking about 'Least Premium'?

If so,

*Shannons will insure the car but only if you're old enough and have an unblemished record.

* RACQ/NRMA charge heaps

* Just Car will insure too, but a tad less than the one above, depending on what 'Excess' you're willing to pay = High Excess > Lower Premium

* Guild Insurance is the cheapest, but they'll only insure you if your father/mother are doctors or pharmacists and have business with them

* Famous Insurance I don't know much about

* Some guys like you are willing to have their parent own the car + insure the car + you are a nominated driver on the policy (albeit that you don't drive the car very often).

RACQ said that they wouldn't let my parents put it in their name purely based on the fact that it's a skyline and a lot of guys my age apparently crash them. I've done a bit of research on it and all I've found is premiums are going to cost me around $3000/year with a $2000 excess. Unless of course I get third party which I don't think is a very good idea. Thanks for the info though.

Oh I was looking at buying an R34 25GT, I figured it would be cheaper because it didn't have a turbo but I guess not...

i would try Just Car. they are normally pretty good. Mine was $895 a year for full. I am older than you but when i enquired with NRMA when i got it they were $2200

And mines r33 turbo

Go to Just Car. it will be better but not my much. when I was looking at it for a R33 non-turbo auto with no mods they quoted me ~2600 so its cheaper than RACV but still im would be considered the same as you. 20 yrs old and only had my license 5 months. that said even with non sports car your going to get high costs for comp insurance i was quoted roughly 2k for my commodore to be given comp from just car. young male drivers no matter what your record will always get high premiums.

going to have to put this in because I keep on getting stiffer and stiffer if you know what i mean

SHANNONS!!!!

1) I pay roughly $500 a year to comprehensively insure my mildy modded 207rwkw R33 GTST for 15k. excess is 250 or 350 or something.icon1.gif

2) Punk kid reversed into the front of my car a while back. No excess as wasnt my fault n they came out within days to assess n confirm a quote (no haggling on a generous quote).icon4.gif

3) Was thinking of upping the ante on the car with some more mods to get 250-300rwkw. I called them to discuss- "we dont care what modifications you do, just as long as they are legal". Well im in WA and legal is a very broad term over here and mods can be engineered easily enough anyway. icon6.gif

I icon12.gif you Shannons.

You just need to pass the 'interview' peeps....

I personally would say just car because of what you are looking for, i personally would recommend you a turbo over a non turbo because in NSW P plate laws are stupid, if you are a P plate you don't get to drive turbo. Judging by what i see you are brisbane and top of my head you dont have that law. (I maybe wrong)

I rang shannons before but, because I don't have a lock up garage and I have not had more then 12 months experience with turbo cars they don't want to insure me.

Famous car insurance don't insure under 25, no garage, they limit the distance you are allowed away from your car at night time.

Insurance under your parents name and then add your name is a big no no because it wont make it any cheaper.

If you just place it under your parents name and not add your name, I have heard way to many stores of people not getting the insurance money because of that.
