Well ole faithful is on her way out. Everything still works sweet but i have to restart the pc ten times before it boots as i think one of the HDDs are on its way out and its in Raid format.

So i have just ordered a yummy 60Gb Vertex 2 SSD now help me shop for the rest. I have about $800 lads and here is my selection so far:

Ordering most parts now through netplus as its only about 20mins from mine but anything else you would recommend i am all ears, especially the RAM i have no idea on compatability

* Intel i5 760 - $211 - http://www.netplus.com.au/product/CP1/CPIN...ead-Turbo-Boost

* Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R P55 MB - $164 -

http://www.netplus.com.au/product/MB2/MBGI...i5-i7-Lynnfield

* 1TB Caviar Black - $104 - http://www.netplus.com.au/product/HD4/HDWE...rd-Drive-1000Gb

* RAM - ??????? no idea but i want 6GB worth to go with Win 7 64B edition - any recommendations around say $140 that is compatable with the MoBb?

Sorry to do this to you all as i hate those "build me a pc thread" but ummm yeah.... i really need your advice regarding the RAM and the mobo as i really have my heart set on the i5760.

Thanks guys!

If you are only going for a mild overclock 3.8ghz/air, then any ram honestly around that price will do.

And with that board you can only really go with:

4GB or 8GB (2x2gb or 2x4gb) as its a dual channel, not a triple like the 1366 boards, i5 is 1156

So IMO, 4GB @ $140, you cannot go past the Ripjaws for value, and you get a cooler :blink:

Is the ripjaw definately ok with that MB? lots of reviews of people not sure of compatable RAM with Gigabyte 1156 mboards??

I actually have an SSD an OCZ vertex SSD order i just placed with pccasegear about 30mins ago. If it is definately compatible might add it onto the list.

Yeah will do a very mild OC, prob sit at about 3.3 ghz to be honest.

yeah gskill works fine on my GA-P55A-UD4 brah, I got the 1600mhz sticks, n get 8gb not 6 cause of dual channel not triple like said above lol

one other thing, if you get the 1600mhz ram you'll need to use an eXtreme Memory Profile in the BIOS (piss easy) or it will run at 1333mhz

Turning in the XMP profile simply engages the correct RAM settings.

And for overclock of 3.3 simply hard set the voltage to stock and up the BLCK (i think tahts it?)

Don't use the mobo overclock, sometimes voltages go too high for what you need and in turn more heat.

Especially if using the stock cooler

i have a lovely xigmatek red scorpion as my cooler which is quite nice so all ok there.

Looking at this RAM:

http://www.netplus.com.au/product/MY3/MYD3...VR1333D3N9K2/8G

i am getting most of my parts from that store so may aswell go that. Doesnt seem to be the Hyper range of Kingston RAM but should hopefully be ok to clock it to 3.3ghz.

GSkill (pre-date ripsaw / trident) is completely unstable unless it's specific timing is set so the Dominators need to be set a lot lower than they should be for it to work. Otherwise Dominator GTs are flawless (the ones I got back from RMA anyway) with system at 4GHz ram at ~2000.

Ash XMP also overclocks the processor slightly (well at least for Socket 1156 - mine is 2.88 instead of 2.8, no noticeable difference of course). The GSkill is also reviewed quite well, and is signifigantly cheaper than Corsair (paying for branding IMO).

Thats a fairly cheap price for 8 gigs of RAM btw

Ok so my order that i pick up from Monday is the following:

8GB ram, i5, 1tB HDD windows 7, my baby will be flying for less than 1k! not too mention my SSD should be arriving any moment now from PCCASEGEAR :-)

Do you guys think the ram will be ok for a mild OC?

you running two different sets of memory you mean?

    • Damn it, I was at work last night, and stayed in a room there during the storm with the car outside, but undercover, I just went downstairs and well....there was a large steel locker that has come from some place last night, it wasn't anywhere I could see yesterday, and yeap, it landed on the fraking car....of course it did..... LOL So, I'll need to take it back for paint and panel, luckily it was only the boot that took the hit, so it could have been worse Serves me right for staying at work and getting on the cans with some of the boys
    • Yeah, really happy with how it all turned out As for aftermarket lip, nah, I'm not really a fan for practically reasons on a street car that gets driven everywhere  I did have the full lower kit on my 2015 STI, but found the front lip scrapped alot, even at stock 4x4ish ride height As the NC sits now, with the lowest point of the car at 110mm, so just legal, some steep driveways and steep speed humps will still "just" scrap those little plastic OEM air dam thingies on the undertray just before the front wheels
    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
