My Air Intake Scoop Mod

Hi all.

I have a S2 R33 GTS-T Manual. Only basic mods, full exhaust, std airbox with BMC filter and an R34 SMIC.

I made a scoop the other day out of a flat sheet of aluminium. Basically it sits under the two screws that hold the airbox snorkle to the rad support. The aluminium folds down in front of the rad support with a curve and sits behind the opening that makes up the 'top' grill on a s2 33 front (the gap between the bonnet and bumper). The idea is that the air hits the scoop and is forced up into the snorkle.

Now I know these make power. A ford tune shop that my dad uses did some testing on their design and were picking up 3rwkw. Obviously at the higher road speeds, would be useless down low. I know it works because Im cleaning more bugs out of my air filter than ever before lol.

My question is, will this affect my mixtures (and most importantly fuel economy) by 'forcing air into the airbox and through the AFM rather than having it sucked through? will this imporove or damage my mixtures causing good/bad economy?

Note I think I can feel a slight performance increase at the higher speeds but maybe its the plecebo effect, always hard to say!

any thoughts here would be great

It won't affect fuel mixtures, it'll just make the job of the turbo making boost easier when travelling at speed. You will gain a bit of performance if the new intake is sucking cooler air that it used to.

Not if afm is doing its job - there will be a slight increase in airflow and afm should measure it ok. I have a scoop built into my airdiverter that directs airflow into the snorkel

You're not going to be pushing more air into the intake, your engine only has so much displacement/boost.

Think of it this way, when you breathe in you can only breathe in enough air to fill your lungs. You can't ram in more air by sitting in front of a fan. Engine works the same way, it's the vacuum inside the manifold/engine that draws in the air (and of course the turbo that creates positive pressure), not the air pushing itself into the intake.

There is more than enough air inside the cars engine bay already, all you are doing is getting fresh air from the outside.

More/colder air = a little more power which was my aim. You tend to use the power you have so don't expect any improvement in economy. However it is not a major difference -- you will be unlikely to notice a huge increase in fuel consumption either.

Got a batch made up. He may also have had a range for Skylines but this was a couple of years ago.
