Hi guys,

Looking at upgrading the diff in my R32 GTST. Has an RB25DET fitted & has seen better days... Viscous LSD is still working fine (for now) but diff is very noisy (suspect c/w & pinion or carriers) so figure while I'm there I may as well upgrade LSD. Daily-driver but may end up doing track-work soon.

Basically tossing up between a full GTR rear-end & an aftermarket LSD centre. Roughly same sort of price...

I am a mechanic by trade & specialise in auto-transmissions & diffs, etc so could easily enough fit the Nismo clutch-pack upgrade to the GTR diff.

I realise the GTR shafts are stronger but car is & will be only making around 300rwkw so probably overkill.

Has anyone even had problems with GTST shafts before at any power level?

The thing is GTR shafts are also heavier & for the sake of performance, etc I am trying to keep everything as light as possible.

I know the GTR runs alloy hubs so would this counter-act the extra weight of the shafts?

Any opinions on the best overall compromise would be great.

Cheers

The driveshaft in GTS-Ts have been known to wear over time, especially with highly modified gts-ts

The most common problem is tailshaft backlash which can come in the form of noise/vibration from the rear in a different degrees.

When I had my recent service, my mechanic said that I have a bit of tailshaft backlash present - still can't pick it myself but its there none the less.

With this wear starting to happen with mine, and me only only making 235rwkw, I'd say it would be a good idea to upgrade the diff if your making 300rwkw +

GTR diff will be bullet proof. Get a recon'd second hand one and you'll be laughing.

I snapped a rear axle with 195rwkw. But I think that was no real indication of the strength of the axle. Know plenty of other GTST's with more power or harsher drivetrains that have been fine I think I was just unlucky.

have you considered a 1.5 way? A friend went from a locked diff to a 1.5 way in a 32 and was very happy with it. seemed very predictible and locked hard (Nismo 1.5 way I think it was)

There not terribly cheap to buy outright but he got his second hand at a decent price so if your lucky something like that could show up, or you might find something on import monster or a japanese spares site. I dont know much about the GTR Diff's but I can tell you for sure that the axles are thicker and stronger. But I didnt really think at 300rwkw you would be snapping axles (despite me snapping one with 100kw less)

I have a Nismo 2-way in my 32gtst and I love it, was a daily driver like that for over a year. It's not for everybody though and requires a slightly different driving style.

If you like scaring grannies, mothers and small children in carparks, as well as having a SUPER predictable diff, then go the 2-way :P

Pretty much as bubba has stated.

For a daily i personally would not get a tight mechanical diff. I put a regular old nismo 1.5 way in mine, and though it did the job for the track and skidpan duties the car got, it made me dislike the car as a streeter. Nothing wrong with the diff, i still have it in my s13 track car.

For a streeter i'd get a nismo pro 1.5 way and adjust the preload to soft for daily duties. Plus there is always redline friction modifier to make it a bit nicer as well.

As for breaking drive shafts; If you drag it with sticky tyres you will break a drive shaft at some point. Upgrade to the gtr centre and shafts if that is the case.

this but get the pro tt model and leave the preload in the middle.

mine has seen 300rwkw for 2 years and never missed a beat. it's not a hastle for daily driving at all

    • Getting Dangerously close to being ready to go back in the car. Rockers in with clearance castings now (and a quick check with the USA for the torque settings for the larger custom bolts) Covers and ported FAST Manifold sitting on there. Not fully tightened down as there's some clearancing required for the water pump with the earlier LS1 water pump styles. Example of the clearancing needing to be done: The body has to be ground a little but I'm struggling finding an actual piece of it. The later variant of water pump resolves the issue as the manifold was designed around it. It only came on the VZ LS1 in Australia, it got a different pulley for Gen4 motors. (it also costs $450... vs... $0).

    • Oh...I have the electric mirrors as well iirc ...they're in the same state as just about every other R31 door mirrors, with the 3 plastic screw towers broken/cracked in the plastic molding. All the interior is 'dry', so the mirror switches etc likely all work fine. Some pics below of the trimmer pieces ~ looks to me like previous owner, painted chrome finished trims with black paint ...ergo, the chrome underneath is likely a-ok... ...starts to look yukky posting stuff like this, how much did it cost in fuel on your last sortie up this way?...me just thinking aloud, borrow someone else's 4cyl to cut costs, come do your own pick'n'pull like before to save me some bother...hehe.. but whatever, I'll just earmark bits I know you want, because the way this is all panning out, I'll be able to retire the R31 from daily duty at long last, replacing it with a Subaru wagon I'm lining up in the wings...ergo, my attitude towards the donor pinny shell is starting to wane a bit, and I'm more than happy to help you out there... Like you say though, no rush...and I'll guarantee we won't be moving too far from this locale at any rate 😎
