Are you going to start a thread for each ECU type or what?

first Link, then Tomei... Now Wolf...

Same as every other ECU thread... Go talk to the guy doing the tune.

Use what they suggest to achieve the best result.

For a joe average street car just get Nistune or a PFC. Cheap, easy, and any old dog can tune it.

wolf 3d is a downgrade, no closed loop O2 feedback (bad fuel economy) and only batch mode injection (bad idle, bad fuel economy and hard to tune).

get a PFC or nistune, cheap, easy to tune and good results, but ultimately make sure you find a tuner that tunes them, if theyve never used it before, there is a chance they will do a crap job.

BS! Which Wolf 3D are you talking about?

These are available in the "4 Plus" version.

Nothing intrinsically wrong with the Wolf. I run 1 myself, and it works fine. And it's Oz designed and made.

V400 I am talking about as that ist he one everyone buys as they go for $500 second hand, the newer one is almost $2k new.

the newest V500 version has better features but the software is still average, for the $1500 it costs there are better ECUs out there.

Works fine sure, but define 'fine'.

Fine is fineline fine, I run the v500 and have zero probs. the ecu has more features than I will ever use and the tuneability is beyond reproach.

If you find a tuner who has a penchant for a wolf it has the wherewithall to be tuned s well as any ecu on the market.

You can even tune rb25 VCT with it rolls. :)

maybe I am still sour from the V400 as that was literally a downgrade and the software was terrible, I'm assuming there is newer software for the new models?

You are right though if your tuner loves even the V400 you can still get a half decent tune, but it isn't money well spent in my opinion.

You owe it to yourself to take a bo peep at the v500 Rolls, Like most of the newer crop of ecu's it's all that and a gold watch.

These days its simply a mater of going with what your tuner prefers to work with.

Fair call, I had no idea you were running one, thought I heard motec but that must have been someone else. After seeing the motec software I think I've been spoilt, but you are right if it has the feature set and the tuner is familiar (and a good tuner obv) then you can get good results.

Just in case anyone didn't get it the first 40 times I said it though, the V4 is crap, I feel kind of bad cause I sold mine to someone on these forums with a 25det

yeah i had a few and was the unwitting guinea pig for the series 6 V4 years ago... i hate them with a passion... yeah the new v500 has all the features but other ecu's do a better job for far less work (link vipec and haltech).

I got to the point with the v4 i just turned them away now i turn all Wolfs away as i had issues with incorrect looms etc... just a head f**k. WOLF are the only ECU i wont waste my time over, happy to tune anything else... i just dont touch em on principle now..

Thats my opinion anyway.

I've heard a lot of glowing reports from the vipec but it is hard to filter out real opinions with someone who has a fast car and just assumes it is good, if you had in the ~$2k mark for an ecu not including tune what would you go for STATUS?

just remember the LINK and VIPEC are the same, the new haltech range is nice too.

Both real nice ecu's and the good thing is they dont have too much unessential bullshit like the wolf's.. its like a computer engineer with no day to day tuning experience designed it. The vipec and link software is obviously the same but it is easy to navigate, quick to navigate and isnt bogged down by the unessential.

Only Problem Wolf now have and its a Big one (Well a small person) is one of their Key Staffers.

Just Update any V4s to V400 Firmware and use the latest Software ( Same basics as V500) and all will be fine. All V4s had Closed loop just most tuners dont know how to use it.

they still lack most the hardware required to make it a decent ecu, eg only 4 injector drivers blah blah, I can see the reasoning as a business to not do it though, sales are what keep them alive so you need to constantly push the new hardware.

certainly be worth it if you already had one though

wow, im not an expert but....

I have tuned most ECU's on the market and have had great success with all of them. From Emanage to Motec, Autronic and Nistune.

And honestly, they all do excatly what the individual system is entended to do. Some of them do things very well, others not.... but we almost always find a way to work with a system, instead of just writing it off as a piece of crap.

How ever as a tuner, I take the time to fly to sydney to haltech to do training on the new Platinum ECU's. I attend Wolf training to do the same. I speak to tuners in the industry that use Microtech every day to work out how to use the system to address certain output restrictions that we may have on certain drag cars we do. Every system, I read the book before I tune it, the writers dont make it hard for you to understand.

I hear about certain ECU's having trouble with "cold starting" which is rubbish. You have a tuner that has a cold starting issue, or a customer that has an unrealistic time frame on how long it takes to duplicate what the factory gets done in thousands of hours.

If your tuner can't tune a Wolf 3b then dont get one. If you really want a would 3b Then get one and find some one that will tune it.

if they struggle with that there is an issue in itself :D

ive ran wolfs on all of my cars s14, r32 gtr and got one going in my r34 in january....

they r a good ecu, all of my mates use them 2, from 200kw s13's to a 800hp rx4 drag car....

its all in the tuner, if ur in melbourne take it to robert sabadin in clayton.

i used the v4 in the gtr and 2hunge and it was sweet, the new version v500 hasd ironed out the lil head f**k of cold starts and are very good imo, however as stated there only as good as there tuner. if u contact wolf directly they will tell u there prefered tuner in ur state...
