First stop is at Kym's workshop

We stripped the front exterior and engine bay to do some spot and seam welding

Stange Carbon Fiber brake and HKS drag coilover will go.

IMG_0065.jpg

This Trust drag intercooler used to flow 2+ bars of boost. It might be too big and heavy for the circuit ad will be replaced but it will stay for the time being.

Next step is removing the interior to upgrade the old Andra spec rollcage

IMG_0092.jpg

IMG_0087.jpg

The previous cage is not adequate for the circuit. Most of the bars will be replaced and a few more will be added to give the car more torsional rigidity.

Next stop will be the cage builder.

The engine also had some TLC from myself, D&D Motors and a dry sump kit from Dazmomotosport.

It's the same kit from this thread

Next stop was at Simonbuilt for the rollcage upgrade.

The cage would have been different if the old cage was not there. It's slightly difficult to tig weld onto an existing cage. However I did not have the budget to completely remove the existing chromoly cage.

The next stop was back to my mate, Kym for some more welding and a fresh coat of paint

Zebra, the main hoop was part of the old cage. The cage was built a long time ago with the Andra spec and I think it was done in a rush for racing.

The old engine setup was a true wet sump. Willall was one of the few workshops, that I have seen, that was able to pioneer the wet sump. Their current RH9 is also wet sump and clocks amazing time at the track with slick tyres.

So.. A formula 1 car with 950hp, and weighing 620kg takes 3.8 seconds to reach 200... meaning in a car twice the weight you would need about 3000hp. Not trying to rubbish you mate, and good on you for getting this thing back out of hiding, but perhaps just swallow some pride on the 0-200 claim, and admit you got bum steered, no-one is going to suggest this thing is slow even if it can't pull that time.

lol you have any idea what torque and rpm those F1 engine are capable of?

For 950 hp at 19-20 krpm, it has even less torque than my tuned stockish RB26 with a pair of T517z turbo.

If you want a fair comparison pull a time sheet from a 8sec 4wd or 7 sec RWD drag car and compare.

No one got bum steered at all mate. I am not going to brag about how much mechanical knowledge, IQ or experience I have on here since most guys in the automotive industry can do that well these days. What I can say, without sounding like a complete show off a$$, is that I am going to add probably 25-50kg to the car, use a pair of low mount turbo and I will still be able to pull 0-100 in less than 2.6 sec ...or I will sell the car ;)

The only reason I wanted to post some pics on here is to share them with some of the fans this car had in the past and to show some appreciation of great friends that I met in the automotive industry during my years as a registrar (in my occupation).

If that is too much, I rather do something else.

Simon, the brake will be replaced by a set of AP from my other car. These will be on the market once I finish restoring this car and you are right they are better off for drag racers but people have used them on the circuit and street. I also certainly cant afford the cost of replacement for the disc/pad with regular circuit use.

What do you guys think of the cage?

I would love to get your opinion on the cage especially on the rear bars. I would prefer them to go to the struts but the builder recommended the wheel arches because he believe they are strong

Yes I would love to get Risking's opinion on this too

The cage was built with a budget and I didn't want to add too much weight just in case I like to take the car for a few run in the 1/4 mile as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

A bit more seam welding over the weekend

IMG-20101217-00041.jpg

Those two rear bars just look wrong at the current location. I had a good look over the weekend and the material around the wheel arch is not that thick. I will talk to the cage builder and will get it redone before painting.

it's acutally quite common to have the rear legs terminate on the wheel arches as it's hard to get to the strut towers. the top X in your cage does tie into the rear strut towers anyway. it was always going to be a bit compromised by keeping most of the andra cage and working off that. it was far from perfect to begin with but to be honest I wouldn't worry too much. it's done now and should have the features you need.

the car looks fantastic mate. :) I didn't mean to start a shitfight with the whole 2.6sec 0-200 comment. I just thought it was a typing mistake to be honest and that you meant 100km or something. anyway I'm sure you realise now it's not possible but who cares. it's a really cool car and the engine looks amazing. love the dry sump set-up too. good investment with such a $$$ engine.

I'd be a little worried.

The rear legs are not overly difficult to get to the strut tower, you've already cut everything away making it very simple.

The rear legs are okay where they are but any straight diagonal supports ( the X in you rear section for instance) are meant to intersect no further than 100mm from the mounting plate of the leg they are attatched to. Shedule J 3.2.4

Since your X has it's own mountings as do the rear legs that cage would require a separate ROPS certification to

be log booked. Something I'm really suprised a cage builder was not aware of.

I'm not sure If you side intrusions are within guidline either, perhaps measure them To be sure

Also just noticed that the rear legs meet the main hoop down the side around the top bend considerably. They must meet the main hoop at roof level. Shedule J 3.2.1 paragraph 2.

Looking again I think your intrusions would be borderline. But it would be difficult to get a full weld without bending the legs inwards then pushing them back out if they were joined any lower.

Otherwise the dash bar is above the colum which is good, roof bars are okay but ideally the single roof diagonal would cross over the drivers head not the passengers ( depends on drivers height really, FIA reg requires it CAMS don't)

the hoop to front legs supports could have been a bit longer ( allowed 250mm inwards and 300mm downwards) but can restrict driver entry.

Side intrusions are an odd design but will work just fine, I like mine higher but personal trait more so than requirement.

Triangulation of the rear leg to hoop is good and an excellent idea when doing anything in 4130 if you want it to pass.

What dimension is the tubing used and is it 4130??

If it's 38mm/ 2.6 then you won't have any problems except the legs and 100mm rule. If it's an "undersized" 4130 then from my experiance you will probably need another diagonal in the hoop and longer hoop to leg supports to pass a ROPS certification. ( you will then own the homologation but it's getting expensive and difficult)

I don't like picking at peoples cages cause I appreciate the work that goes into them and the budget restrictions people have. But that's my honest oppinion which you wanted to hear. I may be wrong I may be right. I'm not interested in debating my oppinion with people either. It's just that my oppinion.

Thanks Beer Baron, I know it doesn't sound right and I hate to get draw into this drag vs circuit racers argument but that wasn't the reason why I bought the car so I just lol

Thanks for the honest feedback regarding the cage Risking. The main hoop is 38mm. I am not planning to get it register because it costs too much and I never know when the authority will ban rally rego cars on the street. I greatly appreciate for your feedback. Thanks again.

God damm, Awesome work man. When i first met you i didnt realise you were so much into these cars lol, I should of shown you my build.

Keep it up and cant wait to race next to you :)
