Hi everyone,

I am thinking of having my V35 coupe roof overlaid in the future. My choices are matt black, gloss black, satin black or carbon look.

1. What's the best look for you in those colours? Mine is a pearl white coupe, and I don't know the differences between them.

2. I have heard that good quality ones last like 5 years outdoor and 10 years indoor. Is that correct?

3. How much would it roughly cost? Also, I am in Perth, so if anyone knows a place or person in Perth, that would be great.

4. Let's say I decide to take it back off at one stage, would it damage the paint?

5. Do you personally like it?

Any thoughts and experiences are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

for pearl white id say Gloss black and carbon look but depends on what look you want to go with i find the gloss black on pearl white really nice

the material is Vinil and it will last usually around 5 to 10 years depending on how its maintained - if in sun all the time then it will fade and crack after 4-5 years

the paint underneath will not be damaged by the vinyl as the vinyl just acts like a coat of paint on top , this is if you use professional vinyl for it not some cheap vinyl made in china bought on eBay

maintenance is easy just wash with car wash liquid and rinse and maybe apply wax but no polish or other chemicals as this is plastic based

i know heaps of people in Europe that buy a new car and just wrap the whole car in this vinyl allowing them to change colours and protect original paint for resale

try sign making companies they usually use it for signs on cars so some of the more professional ones will know what you mean

do your research find out what material they want to use then Google it and research it

Thanks Alex.

Yeah, I am also thinking gloss black because it looks like a tempered-glass top and will look nice with dark tint. But first, I might have to compare the colours outside.

I know a person in Perth whom I met before that he does overlays. He is on SAU but I forgot his username. :(

+1 for gloss black. No carbon unless the roof is real CF.

Thanks Alvin.

Yeah, I would prefer gloss black or matte black over carbon look as I think it would look too obvious on white coupe.

There is a guy on the AUS300zx forum that has done his complete car in vinyl wrap and done a great job I must add

Full car vinyl wrap

Thanks for the link, Chris.

I think full car vinyl wrap would cost a fortune though. Nevertheless, it will look very stealth and tough.

I have to say that a lot of people get it very wrong in choosing rim type, height drop and offset.........this must be spot on. Looks great.

Gloss black on a candy white GTI

Thanks for the link, Oz.

Now, you mentioned it and you have a pearl white V36 sedan, there's 1 here in Perth, WA, that has a black roof (Not sure if it's overlay or painted) for sale at my dealer that I bought my V from. I have a photo of it from Perth Autosalon 2010, and will post up this week when I get a chance.

I was close to getting a V36 sedan (with the 7spd box) from Perth several months back, but they were wanting almost 60K for it. Pricey over your way.

I see some whilte e90 M3s also with the black roof, and it does look good.

Yeah. Most things in WA are more expensive than the eastern states. :(

Hi everyone,

I just bought myself a gloss black roof vinyl overlay from a friend of mine (R3N) in WA. He ordered it from bluebatmobile from USA a few months back, and I bought it off him yesterday for AUD$70. He is a great guy to deal with too (Thanks again mate :) ).

Now, I have to find a person or place to do it for me. If anyone know a person or a place I can go to in WA, please let me know.

    • Hi soviet_merlin, We appreciate your concern regarding this possibly being some sort of PR/Political hype, I assure you that is not the case, I wish we could claim something like that, but in this case, we merely reached out for comment on the basis of the outrage we too felt, as those heavily in the automotive industry. Ps. the original source in the social media post is CarExpert not CarExplore.    Best, CE.
    • Made a bit of a discovery, but while I was cruising, I randomly decided to test to see if it worked and it showed up on my IC7. The entire time I tested it before, I never thought to turn the ignition on. I only tested it with head lights turned on but with the ignition off. Huge oversight on my end. I’m a dummy. I know.
    • G'day all, I have drilled and tapped the hole for the relocation of the timing belt tensioner. That was straight forward. I'm unsure if I need to also put another hole for the smaller stud that the spring behind the tensioner catches on (this is how it seems to work in its original spot). Or do you not use the spring behind it and just torque it down? Thanks in advance, I did a search but couldn't find anything related and it doesn't mention it in the rb30det sau guide.
    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much
