ok sorry if this in in the wrong section but could think were else to put it well the story is i have just sold my beautiful R33 GTS yes NON TURBO with fully decked out in full GTR kit nd was dyno'd at 164.7 rwkw so got a very nice price for that and have just got blacks

Now comes the delemer of what to get next i have enough money for either a r34 GTT or a R33 series 2 M spec 40th anniver with all under 100,000 kms on the clock but really dnt no which one i was think the r33 to play it safe as i have already had one and play it safe but is there anything that i should no about the r34 like hard for after market parts and so on and if this helps power wise looking for around 230-270 rwkw so if all u guys could lend me ur 2 cents worth id be greatful

wow, 164rwkw from a natro. must've had a bit of work done to it.

as for what to go, well don't pay too much attention to the kms on the clock as there is a very good chance that they are not genuine and the actual car has done much more. secondly, there is no M spec r33. you are actually refering to the type M (M spec is a version of the r34 GTR). pretty much every r33 GTS-T is a type M (with the exception of one of the models of the sedan), so don't bother only looking at cars that say type M in the description. if it is a gts-t then you can assume it's a type M. i know i'm beaing picky but too many (in fact most) people get this info wrong.

as for things to know about the r34, well a lot of parts will be common to both r33 and r34. for the parts that are different you shouldn't really find it any more difficult to find parts for either car.

as for which car to get, it really comes down to what you like the look of the most.

rb25neo is a much better engine, solid lifters for starters, digital dash so I dont know if they are harder to wind back. much nicer interior, feels more nible from what ive experienced, I preffer 34 for looks but that part is personal taste

not a case of winding back, they simply just put in the instrument cluster out of a car that has done less kms. very few people bother with physically winding back the clock these days. so much easier just to get a second hand one from the wreckers.

r34, a r33 in my books is not a real skyline, just a mangled ugly UFO car, which just somehow managed to crash into the Nissan factory, and steal a rb25/20 engine to blend in.

Neo is more responsive and also feel smoother.

+ the usual, less fuel less co2 etc etc.

also a r34 is absolutely sexy.

R34 mate, its simply a newer car, nicer interior your getting a car that was realeased first in 98 not 1993 (yes i know your looking at a series 2, but really theres minor changes with the interior). As people have said, the neo engine is better and newer. PLus you have had the R33.... time to upgrade not side shift.

    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers  
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?  
    • Sorry for reviving an old post, but I'm having the same hot idle tick issue. Did anyone ever find out what it was?  I have checked/ replaced Injectors Coils checked Lifter clerance (is at zero) Checked Cam lobes Replaced exhaust gasket and studs Would appreciate any advice this is driving me nuts  
    • There's a huge reason manufacturers are tuning in dead flat torque curves... Make them reliable (and more drive able)
    • What HVAC actuator is under the steering wheel? Do you mean on the RHS of the centre console, immediately to the left of your shin? If so, then yes, it is probably that one, because that is the mode door actuator, and from what I know, it's still a pain in the arse to replace. I don't know about whole dash out, but you certainly have to rip into the centre console section. I don't know if it's covered in the workshop manual, as I haven't spent much time looking at those parts of it. (and by "the workshop manual, I mean the R32 GTR one, which is the most comprehensive one we have, and it should be similar enough between that and later cars to serve as a guide).
