NFS Underground control problems

I am having major dramas setting up my joystick (wingman force 3d) for NFS underground.

Firstly,

Each time i load the game the settings change. The brake control which i prefer as the trigger changes to the rudder twist. This makes it impossible to drive cause each time u turn u hit the brakes as u cannot keep the twist centered.

This would be ok, just simply change the settings each time i load the game but,

Secondly,

I downloaded the patch yesterday and now I have about 5 controls which i cannot assign a setting to. They are just left blank and i cannot select it.

What is up with this crazy controller setup?

Anyone else have any problems?

Ok, I have fixed the second problem, but I still cant get it to keep my brake settings. Its very frustrating having to constantly change it every time
