The reality is, those who go out and actually race (door to door) feel that supersprints/time attack is SOFT.

I've seen this attitude quite a bit & it's what is driving any angst behind this thread.

Personally, those who don't want to have anything to do with sprints/time attack, well, they should stay the hell out of this thread IMO.

Not sure that it is.

Super sprints have been around for years. It has become more popular over the many years & the grids of cars have been getting quicker and with higher quality cars in them. Then the "time attack" thing comes along & the hype mongers pronounce the whole idea was invented in Japan a couple of years ago. Then a bunch of fitted cap types get on board because A: Drift is dying & B: Hype.

Which is pretty much what is wrong with "time attack".

Dont misunderstand me I love the cars many of which are head and shoulders infront of most of what is allowed to go racing. Full credit to those who are having a go.

As an aside there are state based super sprint championships & a yearly national Australian championship. Done under CAMS.

I find the race types who want to be seen as really hard profess to hate CAMS & V8 Supercars. Less so time attack.

Well said, The truth is the guys at the top end of time attack live on the edge more in one lap than the paint rubbers do in 10,

Its awe inspiring to watch them leave nothing behind.

That's because after the first lap, the next nine are left in a time attack to let the sphincter relax from those 5 close calls with wall. Well that, and trying to air the smell of dioreah (sp) out of the car!

I haven't yet entered a super sprint, nor a door to door race. I've only done a few track days, and the plan is to do more of all.

But for me, door to door is where it's at. It's not about one "f**king quick" lap where on lap two it doesn't matter if you hand grenade the motor, so long as no one goes quicker then you, you've one, it's all about putting multiple laps together, all the while, one tiny mistake can let a much slower spec'd car (Running a lower lap time) through to win. Keeping the car going for one session isn't even the half of it...

I quite enjoyed the times I had on the track when others were close by and getting to have "some fun" of trying to keep with each other...

No, Its the fastst growing form of motorsport because all the paint rubbers like you start threads like "FATZ GOES RACING" and years later we're still reading about it with no racing in sight.

LOL!!! I love you noel. :) you're all right for a queenslander.

Now that's how you pick a fight!!! he's got your number fatz. next time call the thread "fatz goes drinking, sometimes talks about racing"

poor fatz, trys to stir things up and it gets all personal on him!

Not sure that it is.

the real racers I know don't put down any form of motorsport. ok maybe regularity. lol. just kidding regularity fans, don't hit me with your walking sticks!

but seriously (and this is not directed at djr81) the guys I know who love motorsport enough to spend most weekends working on their car, along with spending the GDP of a small west african nation on parts, they don't have time to pur down any other type of motorsport competition. they are too busy enjoying whatever the hell it is they do. Personally I love supersprints and have been doing cams sprints on and off (mostly off lately) since about 2002, I love improved production and have been watching mates race in it for over 10 years, same goes for combined touring, and prod sports, and careera cup (RIP) and even v8 super-poopers. hell I even watch nascar sometime. there is always some good in any form of TOP LEVEL motorsport. and as far as sprints go 'time attack' is that top level where the big boys come out. if it's not for you then no ones putting a gun to your head. no need to try and figure out what attracts people to it. who would have thought guys like dave loftus and geoff brandstater who have been running cars in various IPRA classes (and winning) for years and done combined touring (and wining) too would have been interested in 'just a sprint' but they were and they developed their car to suit the format and did bloody well and hopefully they'll be back again.

Baron - I still think you should enter the Atlas...least then if any pesky Rx7's go backwards up pit lane you can run them over and steal their horsepowerz

maybe I could win the over 3Tonne class? then maybe someone would buy it!!! i could open the back doors and swallow and RX7 if it will help me.

This thread is funny!!!

having done sprints for a couple years, the first superlap and now doing door to door - I think they are all good forms of motorsport.

just dont have drifting at SL!!!!!!!! :domokun:

on a side note,

but those guys saying they cant afford doing door to door but want to try it, I found it doable - only because it is an MX5!all depends on what you want to try the racing in, what class - MRA and iRace has some close comp in all clases and hell, even me doing 1.14's at wakie with other cars side by side is hell fun!

im not quick, well - my last name says differently!! LOL but Im having fun doing it in a cheap arse gay hairdresser car - thats why I sold my 255rwkw r33 which I wanted to build up for time attack - only because I took a gamble by selling the riceline and buying the 5 and giving it a crack - back on topic - I'll be at SL this year but not working like last time :)

lol who called supersprinters SOFT Duncan?

Any competition with a car is motorsport to me (obviously that excludes that fad drifting, because it's more like syncronised swimming, gymnastics or surfing than a sport). If you beleive some people look down on supersprint, what do you think about motorkhanas (one of the easiest to enter but highest skill disciplines there is?)

The most important thing about getting people involved in motorsport is that the expectations are realistic. And forever, sprints/supersprints have been an entry level format. (no that doesn't mean it is not a competition, anything but.....but it should be cheap!!!).

Superlap kills that idea by requiring top level/international budget in what should be an entry level event.

Noel, Russman....you guys are obviously getting into this with your eyes open, so no problems from me. It's the endless list of people "building a car for superlap" that worry me - with a more realistic goal they could be running 5-15 events a year and having a ball.

But if you want track time in a different state (and I do!) then there are much better events. Come to the SAU wakie day, you will get 7x15min sessions in 1 day for $250, vs superlap 4x10m sessions over 2 days for $400! That is exactly why I entered the supersprint nationals at Phillip Island and Morgan Park, I want to try new tracks and have heaps of laps.

BTW this is thread of the week on SAU (well except maybe for the hottest girlfriend thread)....great to see everyone cares so much :D

Thanks everyone for giving me a great read tonight,,,Laughing like all f*ck.

Some very interesting comments indeed.

Fatz got owned!!!!.

Beer bacon,,,get your hand off it mate,,,never seen you at a supersprint ever!!!. Actually never seen you with a crash hat on EVER.

Someone mentioned radical's,,,I think it was Noel,,,so my ears pricked,,,surely thats wrong. That would not be in the spirit of WTA. Let say one entered and I beleive mine could,,,as well as SR3 or SR8. Maybe I should look at leasing an SR8,,,1.30's here I come.

• All Vehicles must be available for purchase from a major manufacturer currently/previously as a factory OEM vehicle. Define Major.

• No Open Wheel vehicles, Clubman or Kit cars allowed, as determined by the Promoter. Determined by the Promoter!!!,,,since when does a promoter over-rule Cams

Heres another rubbish rule

The rules of the Superlap/World Time Attack 2011 Pro Class Rules(all 3 atually) & Regulations are designed to ensure the highest level of safety. All drivers and vehicles must comply with all written and oral directions of the event promoters. Failure to comply may result in immediate exclusion from the event, with no refund of entry fees. "Oral Directions,,,Give me a break,,,the only oral I'll take is off a grid girl."

This could turn in to a shit fight !!!.

I'll be entering and funny enough Duncan WILL BE looking after my Skyline,,,wont you bitch.

Cheers

Neil.

One thing is for certain you can NEVER keep everyone happy...

Seriously though, legit door to door is something I admire (from a distance) I just cannot take part ATM.

I have a few mates involved in ipra etc. And they do think that sprints is a tad soft... Meh!

Why does everybody think time attack starts and stops with WTA or superlap as its called. As much as I love the spectacle (minus the stinking drift cars) It is quite unique in time attack terms.

We run time attack up here and it truly is run what you brung, Dont give a fig if its an excel or an ex formula one car. the game is open to all.

The newman berry boys turned up one day in a stock 32 gtr and look at them now. Handbrake turned up in a shitty old brand spanking new 35 gtr and down specced it (in nissans eyes) to a fire breathing flame throwing horse of a car. Our man John drops in courtesy of his helicoptor and hops in to his fully prepped radical with pit crew in attendance.

At the other end of the spectrum are the usual hard working middle class Aussies with their gtsts, gtrs, Evos old bimmers, modern hot hatches, hondas, holdens, fords and whatever else can be started and has 4 wheels.

For those few happy hours each track day the world revolves around what happens there and then, The guy in the chopper pats the guy in the honda on the back when he chops a couple of 10ths off his pb and vica versa.

Everybody to a man has no bad thing to say about any form of motor sport and most would like to try it all at some stage. Reality is the time attack format works best for most because of time and or budget constraints and in Mark and other peoples case family concerns about safety. (very real concerns I might add)

Go bang doors, Go hill climb, go time attack, go karting. Just get out there and do it. The more that do the better our chance of survival in a climate of anti anything that blokes like to do.

By the looks of it the promoter wants road car type cars, at least for the base which may be then highly modified without (or so I thought) going to the level of space frame cars/ sports sedan.

If you take this view its obvious why things like the radical and open wheelers etc are not allowed, and in my mind it is understandable.

Perhaps they could define major manufacturer as a auto manufacturer that has sold atleast 1 million cars in it's current guise, surely that would alleviate any ambiguity.

For those that feel there should be open slather perhaps a look at Formula Libre` I think its called ?

Hi all

Supersprint or door to door is a personal choice - worse luck both have tooo often incurred paint swapping.

I agree superlap is a fantased supersprint, but there is some nice cars - and a few bucks chasing the sport and the purple girls were @#RF, why aren't they at state supersprints or IRace meetings (I will be speaking now, this has been bought up - to Irace organisers - this is now to be a must IMO) Drop the drivers briefing, and have pit girl check out time instead! (Imagine the lap times)

Yes supersprints budget if lots nicer, and more often than not the people. But does not come without incident

Yes race is a bit more expensive but might fulfil the goal you are chasing if some dickhead doesn't get too excited and likes the colour of your car on his

For example Brother in law, car in weekend F#^^$D at Bathurst IPRA (12 Hour) - note Torana was genuine full ground up rebuild / how would you feel? Driver or Drover!

As an old friend once told me, don't mix your probabilities with your capabilites!!

Except for Fatz...the man speaks the truth!

At the end of the day, anyone in a quick car will be questioned with regards to their ability (its all the car). Ppl in slow cars are typically free of that sort of scrutiny...fact is its far harder to punt a fast car fast then a slow car fast... if you let other peoples comments affect what you do with your car then that is pretty sad...its your dime and its your time...do as you please!

If you are not too proud and your eyes are open when you do track days, you will realise there are guys out there that drive circles around the majority of us....and to put the competition and fun behind the requirement to perform or beat people then you are only cheating yourself of some good fun

Hey Noel, everyone talking in this thread about Time Attack who lives outside QLD means "Superlap ™".

What you guys call time attack locally is exactly the same as our supersprints. Open rules with lots of classes. It's just in QLD yours mostly don't run under CAMS because there is only one CAMS track.

Marlin, Tim said you are full of gay

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
