thinking of taking out this piece to lower the coilovers another inch or so.

I cant see why you would suffer any ill effects, it's only a spacer between the two locking collars. As log as you nip the collars back up once you're done it should be fine.

Also try to ensure the springs remain captive at full droop, doesn't need to be much; just as long as the spring can't rattle around loose.

you'll probably need a tender spring to keep it captive if you remove that

so basically they'll just be a bit noisy/rattly.. i dont mind that
