I personally have not a lot of faith in Turbosmart gates after seeing some shocking results...

Bigger gates are generally better no matter what, only issues being cost as well as sound. We used a Tial 60mm on my mates 6boost 3076R set up and it sounds average (like a wheezy emphysema patient)

Is that running a screamer though?

Why does it sound bad, is it too loud?

Does blowing into a tube sound like a whistle?

The smaller gate and pipes would sound heaps aggressive as the gas fights to escape, the big ones would casually let it out with ease.

ive used a 38mm turbosmart ext gate before and it held boost perfectly fine. it only hard around 210-220rwkw tho lol

if its too big it won't control boost properly.

There would be a sweet spot for gate sizing vs turbocharger flow capabilities. At a certain size, as the valve is lifted off its seat, more gas than necessary will bleed off and slow the turbine more than desired so you get an oscillation in turbo speed and a wavy boost curve. It's a bit like the effect that you can get when running a VH45 throttle body, and the slightly jerky response when cracking the throttle at idle. Anyone who's experienced an old school multiple carb setup with bigger than ideal size throttles will understand what I'm getting at.

It's good to use a combination that works. A large gate will have no problem with venting enough gas, more the problem is to have a fine enough degree of control.

Obviously Simon's setup works.

Fair enough and agreed on Simon. These L2 20Gs use the same rear end as Simon, so I suspect the Tial may be a winner again... Yet that is obviously based on how well the components flow as a system rather than the volume side of things, as the 25G flows a 'little' more volume lol.

ARTZ / DVS JEZ any updates? :D

ARTZ may be a while, but Jezza needs to stop tuning other peoples cars so we can see some results from his own! lol

I also thought of a new combo this morning that would be good (but all out custom as no T3 option) - TD06SL2 18g 8cm. Plenty of exhaust glow and a nicely balanced compressor. This one is for those who say the RB25 needs some good exhaust flow. Obviously the TD05H 18G in an 8cm would give some fking epic ZING.

I wish i had time to do my car. I have a r32 with 2530 to tune tonight. Then r33 with ss1.5 this week. Then 2 on saturday.

Then maybe i can start putting my wiring loom in my drifter.

Piping will be started tomorrow night.

Ill fit z32 afm and my nismo 740cc this week.

Curious to see how my little 38mm turbosmart wannabe wastegate goes. Cost me a wopping $80

that would be good for around 250-260ish rwkw or so

would lack a bit in the top end i reckon but pack alot of mid range.

a guy posted on the forced induction section yesterday or earlier about forced performance in the US making BB TD series CHRA, this will be something to keep an eye out for as it looks interesting.

so are we lol

Meh, pointless IMHO.

BB cores are older than us, if it were so usefull Mitsu would have used them on their homologated Evo's. Those cars run TD05H-16G, bullsh*t response.

Their homo EVOs were destined for rally and were invariably going to be running antilag, transient response wasn't going to be as much of a problem as continously rebuilding turbos running expensive ball bearing cores would be had they gone that direction - ball bearing cores would probably be more suited to the clubsport folks :)

Get that man a new!

Six of one half a dozen of the other. The BB debate is so past its used by date I'm affraid my own car will smell of roten egg's if I run one (problem is I do). I really doubt the difference will be night and day when you test these new BB TD's.

Best turbo's Ive owned or worked with have been journals. Worst have all been BB. Most responsive turbo Ive driven has been journal, laggiest has been BB.

The above tells you nothing about what BB vs Journal is all about, again I dont think there is much point in building BB core TD turbos. Le meh.

unusual how you say the BB would be laggier.

ive tested non bb R33 GTR turbos Vs R34 GTR turbos (BB) and the R34 units spooled much quicker then the R33 units.

anyway this is not a thread to discuss BB vs non BB, lol

lets see some more results of these bad ass turbos.

Every two weeks I look for a TD05H-18G with an 3" inlet to trial on an RB20. I suspect with an external gate setup it wont suffer the boost drop off the 2530 does and with a little more compressor flow then a 2530 coul dbe a good 230-250rwkws turbo for an RB20 with 20psi up it.

Interesting to hear who has done 20,000-30,000kms on this Kando turbs? If they are proving reliable over plenty of kms I may try him to get an 18G made up, but would need to be a Greddy 3 bolt rear housing.

I can't remember, and i am not searching but don't R34 gtr turbos have smaller exhaust housings? .64 vs .48?

theres enough info on the net with back to back BB versus journal and i've backed to backed it aswell,(BB T28 versus journal) transient response is "slighlty" better, but only really noticed on light throttle openings(1/4 throttle, bringing up a few pounds of boost ), so maybe for a motorkhana car its worth it, for the rest of us it won't make a difference

Pretty much feels like running a bleed valve versus a EBC when you use really light throttle openings to just bring up a few psi, the ebc feels that little bit more perky

All you need now is your triangle housing!

Although I've only ever seen him with TD06 based triangles.... Im sure he could make one or might have one on shelf..

Are you using the stock exhaust manifold or did you make one? Are you planning to put the setup on kill to see how much we can get out of this particular turbo?

The more i look, the more i like the idea of a TD06 SL2 20G 10cm,stock mani, weld gate on either exhaust housing or adapter ....set on kill with some pre-turbo water injection

cheers
