Hey all

Well my problem is that the old girl has a problem at idel but on when it is @ 1500rpm and starts to shudder and miss fire not really sure what the problem could be cos i changed the plugs about 6months ago and the coilpacks about 8 months ago, but the machenics i took it to said it was just the way that stageas run and they couldn't do anything about it, so it has stayed that way since it dosn't effect the proformance at all. but i guess it mabe a problem that could effect the engine later on down the track and just want to nut out the problem so it dosn't develope into something big.

any help would be much appreciated

thanks

Josh

This is mechanic speak for "I'm a stupid donkey who spent my entire apprenticeship smoking cones in the toilet, instead of learning my trade.

Now due to my complete lack of functioning braincells, and the fact that the only tool I ever used at work was a mop, and I was quite intimidated by it; I now have no ability to troubleshoot anything more than the mophead falling off the handle."

Run far far away from this workshop, and find a mechanic who is actually prepared to engage his brain, and at least ATTEMPT to diagnose the problem.

Either that, or purchase a blue & white striped apron for him, so everyone can identify him as the butcher he patently is...

lol

might I suggest a few things and people can chip in with others I've missed:

ignition:

- coilpacks (checked)

- plugs

- plug gaps

fuel:

- IAC valve (clean it - see the DIY, unsure of differences with the NEO engine)

- MAF sensor - may need cleaning, or resoldering of pins (cut silicone out of the square, remove, resolder, re-silicone... in the DIY somewhere on SAU)

- injectors (may need cleaning)

- injector latency? (I just replaced mine with new Deatschwerks 600cc units and the tuner said that the latency adjustment was not fine enough to get a perfect idle)

Also check your idle speed setting - on the auto the idle is only 650RPM

I don't personally believe, with the stock setup at least, that the stagea should idle any other than brilliantly. Mine did, and with the large aftermarket injectors now fitted it is not horrible, only slightly rough.

acceleration is still fine boosts fine and still maintains power (besides a drop between second and third every now and then) i had my plugs changed but the same place as stated but these guys are total muppets and i also suspect them to have stolen stuff from my car when it went down there for a quote after being stolen but thats neither here nor there, i have suspected the idel control unit to be playing up and or the o2 sensor, but i just need to take it to a family mechanic and he'll go completely over it as its soon to go over the pits to get her back on the road due to those kents that stole it, but thanks for the help guys have a day off wednesday and might have a little tinker around and see what i come up with.

Cheers boys

    • The powder coating came in at $250 EACH. The TRX rims got a coat of clearcoat on the outside only.
    • Bit wet, but YUMMY
    • Keeping in mind that I am currently getting flat 10 L/100km on my RB25DET, which means >>500km/tank. I would test this car for vacuum leaks, check codes and AFM signal with NissDataScan as D says, check plugs, do a compression check while they are out.
    • It is hard to be specific half way across the world...but it *seems* like it might have a minor issue. Is the idle stable and does it rev smoothly? I would not expect any pops out of what I am assuming is a standard ECU, standard tune, standard exhaust. You can use Nissan Data Scan to find out exactly what is happening when it runs, the cable/software is reasonably affordable if you are not planning on changing the ECU (which hopefully you are not with an NA skyline) BTW your mileage may not be that far off, these are heavy old tech cars, and being NA might mean you use a heavy foot to keep up with traffic....
    • Hey guys! Y'all are the masters so figured I'd check in on a few items here. - My engine sounds ever-so-slightly more raspy than the other NA RB25s I've listened to. It's barely noticeable but definitely a slightly different sound. - When I back off the throttle at high RPM, I will sometimes get a pop out of the exhaust, assuming this can be diagnosed as misfire. Some history on the car: - Had an exhaust leak in auction sheet but was claimed to be fixed by seller (bought from USA importer).  - Car's coil packs and sparks were replaced when it was sold to me, but unsure on what the gap is and whether the coil packs are correct.  - A prior mechanic had misdiagnosed a pilot or throwout bearing sound as LSPI/detonation. Had played with timing a bit, pops/raspy sound of engine just got worse. Got timing reset. - Had failed emissions a few times. First time went in as is, failed. Second time, replaced cat, still failed, running rich as hell. Third time replaced o2 sensor, passed. Car still smells gassy though. - Timing belt and valve cover gasket also replaced.  - Gas mileage is... low. about 350-400K per tank.  Any idea if I'm having any serious issues here or does this all sound like normal old NA RB stuff and I'm fine to drive it with the pops/slightly raspy engine? If it'll help, I can get drop a video of the sound of the engine.
